Greater St. Louis Area Insulation Codes

July 27, 2021

“An estimated 75% of U.S. buildings will be new or renovated by 2035. Building energy codes ensure they use energy efficiently over the life of the building.” – Energy.gov

Energy Codes may seem complicated, and that’s because they are.  The United States does not set building codes at a national level – they are governed at a state and local level.  Building codes address requirements for everything related to a building including fire, electrical, structural, plumbing, and energy efficiency.

In Missouri, Residential Energy Codes and Commercial Energy Codes are not set statewide, rather are left to individual cities, municipalities, and jurisdictions to determine and enforce.

Most energy codes are modeled after the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

“Buildings consume about 40% of the energy our nation uses, so making buildings as efficient as possible is important. America’s model energy code — called the International Energy Conservation Code — sets out minimum efficiency standards for new construction for a structure’s walls, floors, ceilings, lighting, windows, doors, duct leakage and air leakage.” - energyefficientcodes.org
