Earth Day: Invest in Our Planet and Reduce your Energy Bill
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection, to honor the Earth and the concept of peace. The official theme for 2022 is Invest In Our Planet.
Invest in our Planet, your Home, and Reduce your Energy Bill
U.S. households consume energy to power numerous home devices and equipment, but in South Carolina on average, almost two-third of a household’s annual energy consumption goes towards heating and air conditioning.
According to a report by North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA), up to 90% of U.S. single families are living in under-insulated homes, wasting energy every single day. And Insulation can help to stop this waste and provides various benefits, from lowering your energy bill, through enhancing comfort of your home, to reducing external noise. Insulation simply saves money, promotes a higher quality of life, reduces the carbon footprint, and is a sustainable investment in our planet with the shortest return of investment time of all energy improvement measures.
Do you have an Opportunity to Reduce your Carbon Footprint?
Just poke your head up into your attic and look around. If you can see the joists that make up your attic floor or even bare spots, you are seriously lacking insulation. If you see the skeletal beams that means you have 5 1/2 inches or less of insulation. This equals approximately an R-value of 19, which puts you roughly 7 inches of fiberglass or cellulose blow-in insulation below the Greenville code for attics that requires an R-value of 30. The “R” stands for resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.
Another indication are high temperature differences between floors and rooms. We often hear, “My upstairs will not cool no matter how low I set the temperature”. After hundreds of dollars are spent on unneeded HVAC maintenance trips and additional freon, one of the technicians told the customer to have someone look at the insulation. Sure enough, the customer’s insulation had not been addressed in over 30 years and needed significant improvements.
Last but not least if you feel that you are paying way too much each month for your utility bill, your insulation should be one of your first places to look. If your home allows your temperature-controlled air to escape, the furnace or air conditioner must work overtime to combat this. Pay attention to how often your unit runs. If you notice that it is running constantly, you are unfortunately paying more than you should.
