Understanding Insulation R-Value

Insulation R-value is a measure of an insulation material's ability to resist heat flow. The "R" stands for "resistance." The higher the R-value, the better the insulation. R-values are measured in units of thermal resistance per square foot-hour-degree Fahrenheit (hr-ft²-°F).

In simple terms, R-value tells you how well an insulation material can keep heat from escaping from your home in the winter and entering your home in the summer. The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation will be at keeping your home comfortable and reducing your energy bills.

Climate Zones

The recommended R-value for your home will depend on your climate zone and the specific location of the insulation. For example, you will need a higher R-value for your attic insulation if you live in a colder climate. According to the Energy Star climate zone map below, Connecticut is in zone 5. In Connecticut, typical recommendations for exterior walls are R-13 to R-23, while R-30 for ceiling and R-38 and R-60 for attic spaces.

Is More Insulation Better?

The higher the R-value of your insulation, the better it will be at resisting heat flow, which means that your home will be more comfortable, and you will save money on your energy bills. However, there is a point of diminishing returns. A good rule of thumb is to have an R-value of at least 49 in your attic and R-value of 13 in your walls.

Here are some additional factors to consider when choosing insulation R-value:

  • The type of insulation: Different types of insulation have different R-values. For example, spray foam insulation has an R-value of about 6.5 per inch, while batt insulation has an R-value of about 3.5 per inch.
  • The thickness of the insulation: The thicker the insulation, the higher the R-value.
  • The location of the insulation: Insulation is most effective when it is installed in the attic, walls, and floors.
