The Dangers of Moisture and Humidity in Your Home
Winter can be a very cozy time of year. Now that it is much colder out, we all retreat to our homes and enjoy all the soft blankets, crackling fires and hot cocoa.
This also means that our homes are much more closed up and our windows and doors stay shut for many months. Because of this, the chance for mold growth and water damage increases if our homes get too humid.
Lower Your Humidity
If you constantly notice that your windows or a particular door is always sweating or condensing, your home may be too humid! This can be caused by improper insulation, inadequate fans and overuse of electrical heat, like space heaters.
If your home doesn’t have a dehumidifier system, now may be the time to understand how they work and install one yourself. Dehumidifiers work by pulling excess moisture out of the air.
You can also do little things every day like running the fans throughout your house to keep air circulating. It is also important to run the vent hood in your kitchen while you are cooking and allow your bathroom to fully dry each day to prevent moisture buildup and potential mold growth.
Install or Update Your Attic Fan
Our attics do so much work for our houses, but they are often overlooked in terms of maintenance and upkeep. If your attic doesn’t have a reliable way to vent or circulate air, humid air and moisture can build up over time and create structural problems, roof issues and mold growth.
Having an attic fan installed is a great way to keep air moving throughout this space. As heat rises, the fan can help circulate the air through and up out of your vent systems. An attic fan can also help extend the life of your roof by preventing shingle damage and ice dams.
Address Your Windows and Doors
Any areas of your home that experience condensation could be warning you of inadequate insulation. Spaces like your windows and doors are constantly warming up and cooling down throughout the day, so if there are any gapping or drafts, moisture buildup is common.
Adding in some insulation or having us come out to air seal around these areas can reduce this problem and can keep your home more comfortable.
We want your home to be as comfortable as possible this season! This includes watching and controlling the moisture levels in your home. Whatever you need from our Koala Insulation of Central Connecticut team, we are here to help you.
