Is Your Fireplace Ready for Winter?

Having a fireplace can be such a nice way to stay warm during the cold winter months. In addition to the warmth they provide, fireplaces can be an energy-efficient way to heat your home while providing a beautiful ambiance of soft, dancing colors.

But for a fireplace to function correctly, it should be inspected and cleaned every season!

Avoid Fire Hazards

Having a buildup of soot, ash or creosote (the oily wood-tar that can stain chimney walls) can be massive fire hazards within your home. Addressing each area of your fireplace ensures that there is no flammable residue left over before starting your first fire of the year.

It is also important to inspect the chimney on your roof early in the season. Any sort of blockages over the opening can cause the smoke to travel backwards into your home if it can’t get out. Blockages or deterioration of the bricks can contribute to house fires as well.

Gas Fireplaces Require Special Maintenance

If you have a gas fireplace, you still need to perform annual maintenance on it! Even if the logs aren’t burning or creating ash, there is still a chance of starting an unwanted house fire.

Cleaning off dust and debris from the logs before the first fire of the season can help minimize the risk of a foreign object catching fire behind the glass.

When you put it all back together, don’t forget to install it in the correct way to ensure that it will work safely when you turn it on. The main burner flames should always have strong yellow tips that end with a blue or white base. Safety is key whenever fire is involved inside your home!

New Insulation Can Benefit Your Fireplace

Since fireplaces can be an energy-efficient way to heat your home, you don’t want all that heat to easily escape out of your attic or other exterior walls!

If the rest of your house remains chilly while your family room is toasty warm or if your room quickly gets cold again after the flames go out, you could benefit from upgraded insulation. We can help you with any insulation project you have this season.

We are here to help tackle any insulation project. Contact us today at Koala Insulation of Central Connecticut to get started.
