‘What should I expect when I schedule an insulation upgrade?’
Well, the answer is (everyone’s favorite) – that depends. Regardless of the job type, there’s a few things that are common throughout.
- Arrival – our team will alert you via app that generates a notification to you that we’re en route to your home. Upon arrival, we’ll greet you at the door and discuss our plan for the day and how long we think it will take for the job to be completed.
- Site prep – our team will begin to lay down protecting plastic around, over, and near your belongings that are potentially going to be exposed to fibers, splashes, or a minor, temporary mess. We always prioritize cleaning before and after our jobs so that you don’t know that we were ever there, but it’s a good idea if you’re worried about something to just move it out of the way for the day.
Next, this depends on what product you’re having installed:
- Spray-foam – spray-foam is a chemically derived type of insulation. As far as insulation performance goes, it is fantastic. As a chemical, there are some health risks that we mitigate by wearing full PPE and face-covering respirators. If you elect to have spray-foam installed in your home, we’ll require that you vacate the home after we arrive, while we spray, and for a full 24 hours after we’re finished spraying. This helps to protect you, your family, and your pets while the chemical may be present in the air. Once it settles and cures into its solid form, it’s safe to be around and breathe. We always over-emphasize safety because it’s the most important thing to us and you. Once we begin spraying, the material is applied in a liquid form before it begins to solidify into its permanent shape.
- Blown-in insulation – we will snake a hose through your home to the area that we’re blowing in insulation (fiberglass or cellulose). Once we begin blowing, you’ll hear our generator outside that sounds like a neighbor’s lawn mower. The majority of the home is perfectly normal while we blow in the insulation, but during an install it’s worth noting that the immediate area near the install may have some fibers in the air.
- Batt insulation – batt insulation (whether fiberglass, mineral wool, denim, rock, or even Hempwool) requires the least machinery of the bunch and is exclusively a manual install. You’ll see our team carrying material throughout your home to the spots where an install is needed.
When all of our job types are completed, our team will clean up the install area – removing any scraps, trash, tools, or materials that are resting nearby. We will vacuum the floors and restore the area to be as close as possible to how it was before we got there. Our goal is for it to look better after we were there, than it did before.
As always, if you have anxieties about any point in this process, feel free to ask one of our team members. We want you to feel comfortable.
