Every homeowner knows the struggle of dealing with mice. They can be pervasive and persistent, mice can have major implications on your home and your health. If you have been looking into pest control solutions and are interested in spray foam for mice infestations, there may be a better solution.
Pest-Proofing your Home using Insulation
There are multiple solutions commonly used to deter pests and rodents. All of these solutions require a pest control license to install, which we don’t carry. That being said, these products are only necessary if your house has prolonged or ongoing pest issues. We partner with pest control businesses locally to address the infestation, remove contaminated insulation, and install the correct insulation to suit your long-term needs. In most cases, a traditional insulation product will be the best option and likely be more than sufficent to deter the occasional mouse.
Keep Mice Out Using Spray Foam Insulation
Spray foam is designed to seal air leaks in your home, including all those holes and cracks that pests use to infiltrate your house. The spray foam material expands to fill every gap where it is applied, creating a barrier inside gaps in doors, walls, windows, and flooring.
Spray foam will deter mice and other rodents/pests by blocking their paths to the indoors, such as foundation cracks. The insulation is incredibly difficult for mice or other pests to chew through.
Is Spray Foam Insulation Mouse-Proof?
Unfortunately, spray foam insulation isn’t mouse-proof. Given enough time, mice can eat through most types of insulation. But spray foam insulation can keep mice away long enough for you to address the causes of the mice infestation.
Will Mice Eat Through Spray Foam?
Yes, mice can eat through spray foam insulation, but it will take a considerable long amount of time and effort. Closed-cell spray foam is denser than open-cell spray foam, making it a better option for preventing infestations. Some homeowners with ongoing pest issues also use cellulose insulation, which often contains chemicals that deter pests.
Getting Rid of Mice in Your House
When you notice signs of pests or mice inside your home, we suggest following these steps to get rid of them fast. Of course, the best way to get rid of mice is to eliminate their entry point in the first place; we have tips for that, too!
1. Identify and Seal Entry Points
Look for gaps, cracks, and openings that are points for mice or rats to enter your home. If you haven’t previously spotted mice, the nest is probably still outdoors; sealing entry points will prevent them from reentering or others from following them inside. Effective methods include using high-quality sealants, replacing insulation (where necessary), and adding physical barriers like steel wool and metal sheeting. These materials are all difficult for mice to chew through – but don’t put it past them.
2. Set Mouse Traps
Equipment like snap traps will capture and kill mice; if you prefer taking a humane approach, purchasing live traps are a great alternative. Put these traps in places where you have seen mice already or areas with mouse droppings.
3. Move Food and Nesting Materials
Just like any animal, mice are motivated by food and shelter. Getting rid these will reduce their activity. Clean up food crumbs or spills and remove any clutter from basements and attics, as mice often use random material to make their nests.
4. Repellents
Some homeowners use peppermint oil, a hot pepper spray, or other pest repellents to force mice to leave their homes. These methods may not be effective in all situations, but if you have a persistent pest, they may be worth trying to reduce the problem.
5. Ask an Expert for Help
If your mice mitigation efforts are not as successful as you hoped, call a pest control expert for help. Acting quickly is top priority because mice and other rodents carry countless diseases.
