What Closed-Cell Spray Foam Actually Costs in Colorado
Spray foam isn’t priced by the square foot, and any contractor quoting it that way is either simplifying for you or guessing.
It’s priced by the board foot, because foam is a volume product. One board foot equals one square foot at one inch of depth. Ten inches deep over one square foot is ten board feet. That’s why two jobs covering identical square footage can differ by thousands of dollars — depth is the variable.
Our current price is $1.25 per board foot for closed cell. The foam we install is rated at R-7.4 per inch.
Those two numbers plus your target R-value let you price any spray foam job in Colorado yourself.
The formula
- Divide your target R-value by 7.4. That’s the depth in inches.
- Multiply depth by the square footage of the surface. That’s board feet.
- Multiply board feet by $1.25.
Worked example — 1,000 square feet of exterior wall to R-21:
21 ÷ 7.4 = about 2.85 inches 1,000 × 2.85 = 2,850 board feet 2,850 × $1.25 = $3,563
Our average residential spray foam job runs about $4,000, which is roughly 3,200 board feet. That could be a small area sprayed deep or a large area sprayed shallow. Square footage alone won’t tell you the price.

Depth by application
Exterior walls: R-21. About 2.85 inches. Some jurisdictions are moving up — Denver County is starting to push R-30 on new construction exterior walls.
Roof deck and exterior ceilings: match attic code, so typically R-60. That’s 8.1 inches. On 1,000 square feet that’s 8,100 board feet, about $10,125. Roof deck work is the expensive scope, and there’s no way around it. The R-value requirement is the same whether you get there with 20 inches of blown fiberglass or 8 inches of foam.
Rim joists: match the wall spec, so R-21.
Cathedral ceilings get treated as roof deck, which is where projects run into a wall we’ll come back to below.
The rule that governs everything: we never fill a stud.
We always leave at least a half inch of stud face visible above the cured foam.
That isn’t a preference. Drywall needs to land on wood, not foam, and the framing has to be readable for anyone who opens that wall in the next fifty years. Foam that swells past the stud face gets shaved, which wastes material you paid for and produces a mess.
Run the math on that constraint and it explains most of what’s possible in Colorado housing stock:
A 2×4 wall is 3.5 inches deep. Minus a half inch of visible stud, the maximum foam depth is 3 inches. At R-7.4 per inch, a 2×4 exterior wall physically caps out around R-22. R-21 fits with about a half inch of margin. It fits, barely.
Now consider Denver’s move toward R-30 exterior walls. That needs 4.05 inches of closed cell. You cannot get there in a 2×4 wall. Not with better foam, not with a more skilled crew. The cavity isn’t deep enough. R-30 walls require 2×6 framing, which is 5.5 inches deep and allows 5 inches of foam, or about R-37.
Rafters follow the same logic. A 2×10 rafter is 9.25 inches, allowing 8.75 inches of foam, so R-60 fits comfortably. A 2×8 rafter is 7.25 inches, allowing 6.75 inches of foam, which is about R-50. You cannot hit R-60 in a 2×8 rafter bay with closed cell.
That’s why cathedral ceilings are complicated. On a retrofit, the framing is what it is. Options are carrying legacy code if a permit allows it, or a homeowner acknowledging in writing that the project will hit the maximum R-value the structure permits rather than current code. We’ll do the second one. We won’t pretend it’s the first.
Where this gets used most in Boulder County
Our highest-volume closed-cell scope is exterior walls — new construction, and older homes being brought up to current code.
That second category is most of the Front Range. Boulder, Golden, Arvada, Westminster and the surrounding housing stock is full of 2×4 exterior wall framing. Closed cell at R-7.4 per inch is often the only product that gets a 2×4 cavity to R-21, because nothing else delivers that much R-value in three inches. That’s the specific problem closed cell solves here, and it’s why it’s worth its price in this market and not in every market.
Open cell: cheaper, and mostly the wrong answer here
Open cell runs $0.25 per board foot against closed cell’s $1.25. Five times cheaper, and the price difference is the first thing a homeowner finds online.
What you give up: substantially less R-value per inch, and no moisture or vapor barrier. In Colorado’s climate, that second point is what matters. Closed cell controls vapor. Open cell doesn’t.
Two applications where we do recommend it:
Sound attenuation. Open cell is genuinely excellent for this. Mid-floor assemblies between levels, media rooms, shared walls. If sound is the goal, open cell is the better buy and we’ll tell you so.
Hybrid systems. Two to three inches of closed cell on the exterior-facing side of the cavity to establish the vapor barrier, then open cell filling the balance of the R-value behind it. You get the moisture control where it has to be and save real money on the rest of the depth. On deeper cavities this is often the smartest way to spend the budget.
One practical warning: open cell expands enormously as it cures. In tight cavities or constrained spaces that expansion is a real design constraint, not a footnote.
Ignition barrier, and what it adds
Foam left exposed to an interior space, or exposed near heat and flame-producing equipment, requires an ignition barrier.
We apply DC-315 or No Burn, which goes on over the cured foam much like paint. That runs $1.00 per square foot — note that’s per square foot, not board foot, since it’s a surface coating rather than a volume.
Where it comes up: parking garages, mechanical rooms, manufacturing and shop spaces, anywhere the foam stays visible. We’re a certified NFPA DC-315 installer, which matters because an improperly applied barrier is worse than an obvious absence of one — it looks compliant and isn’t.
Budget for it on any project where the foam won’t be covered by drywall.
Permits and inspections
Retrofit insulation work doesn’t get permitted in Boulder city or county. No permit means no inspector, which means nothing is independently verified.
New construction is different. Roof deck foam and unvented attic assemblies get inspected, and what the inspector wants is a depth test plus the manufacturer’s spec sheet so they can confirm the installed depth actually delivers the rated R-value. Depth is the proxy for R-value, and it gets measured.
On retrofit work, the same discipline should apply even though nobody is checking. Ask for depth documentation. There’s no third party to catch a shortfall.
Re-entry and cure
Plan to be out of the house for 24 hours. Keep your AC and ventilation system off during the install and for 24 hours afterward — running air handlers during or right after a spray pulls uncured off-gassing through the ductwork and distributes it through the house.
Manufacturer cure times range from about 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the product. That’s cure, which is not the same as re-entry, and the two get conflated constantly. Your sales contact will confirm the specific material on your job and its re-entry window before install day.
When we turn the job down
We say no more than you’d expect for a product we sell.
When a better product exists for your situation. If you get an equal or better envelope from blown insulation and air sealing at a fraction of the cost, that’s the recommendation. Foam is not automatically the upgrade.
When you ask for it installed the wrong way. The common one: homeowners asking for foam on the flat attic floor instead of the roof deck. That’s not how the assembly works and we won’t spray it.
When you want closed cell in a ventilated attic. Foaming a roof deck converts the attic to an unvented assembly. Doing it while leaving the ventilation in place gives you the drawbacks of both and the benefits of neither.
When you want open cell in a system that can generate moisture or vapor. Cheaper today, a wet assembly in five years. We’re not signing our name to that.
When it’s too cold. Foam is a chemical reaction, and reaction quality depends on the temperature of the substrate it lands on. If exterior temperatures or sheathing temperature will produce an off-spec mix, we reschedule. In Colorado that means some winter days are not spray days, and a contractor willing to spray a frozen deck in February is telling you what their quality control is worth.
