The House Looked Fine. The Attic Was a Different Story

From the street, you would’ve never guessed anything was wrong. The house looked great. The attic…not so much.

Mary Lou had rats living up there for years. By the time we got there, the rodents were already gone, but they had left behind plenty of evidence that they’d been there. Her daughter had already been through this. Bess called us on a Thursday morning.
As soon as she mentioned her name, I remembered the house. We’d worked on her home a couple of months earlier.

This time she wasn’t calling for herself. She said, “It’s my mom’s house.” That changed the conversation pretty quickly.

We were at Mary Lou’s place later that afternoon. You could tell they’d been there awhile The insulation had been torn up.
Some of the attic baffles were chewed apart. There were trails through the insulation where the rats had been moving around for who knows how long.

I remember one of the guys pointing at a corner and saying, “They really made themselves at home.” Nobody laughed very hard.
Mary Lou is a senior. She shouldn’t have to climb into an attic trying to figure out what happened up there. Honestly…she shouldn’t have to think about it at all.

We had a plan. The pest removal had already been taken care of before we arrived.

Our job started after that.

After everything was finished, the attic was clean again. The contaminated insulation was gone. The temperatures in the house were better. More than anything, Mary Lou didn’t have to wonder anymore about what was sitting above her ceiling. That part mattered.

Before we left, Bess thanked the crew a couple of times. I think she was relieved more than anything. Sometimes the person calling us isn’t worried about their own house. They’re worried about a parent. Those jobs feel a little different.
