Rat droppings. Urine. Torn-up insulation the rats had been living in.

That was Anna’s attic.

She wanted it out of her home.

She didn’t want to wonder whether dust from that mess was getting into her house—or what she might be breathing every day.

And the dirty insulation was only part of her frustration.

The house was uncomfortable. The AC struggled to keep up. Summer energy bills were high, and the attic was brutally hot.

After roughly 15 years without the attention it needed, Anna was ready to get it taken care of.

We Started With What She Was Living With

Before putting together a recommendation, we walked through the house with Anna. She showed us her areas of concern and explained what she wanted the project to accomplish.

Get the contaminated material out. Help keep attic dust out of the house. Make the home comfortable without the AC working so hard.

Our attic evaluation connected those concerns to specific problems.

Rats had nested in and destroyed the fiberglass. Insulation coverage was low. There were gaps between the attic and the living space, and ventilation was poor.

Adding insulation over the top would have buried the mess Anna wanted gone.

We needed to clear it out and address the conditions around it.

The Rats’ Nest Had to Go

Our crew removed all the old, contaminated fiberglass, along with the nesting material and waste caught in it.

Before we restored the attic, Anna’s pest professional sealed the rodent entry points and confirmed there was no remaining activity.

Fresh insulation wasn’t going in just for the rats to ruin it again.

With the damaged material removed, we cleaned and disinfected the attic. Then we air sealed the accessible gaps between the attic and the rooms below, helping close pathways where unwanted air and dust could enter the house.

Anna wanted that dirty attic separated from the space where she lived. This was our opportunity to address those openings before installing fresh insulation.

Then We Addressed the Heat

Anna also needed relief from a house that struggled through the summer.

The attic had poor ventilation and too little insulation. Cleaning it wouldn’t fix those problems.

We installed fresh insulation and added a solar attic fan to improve airflow and help exhaust hot attic air. Together with the air sealing, those improvements addressed how the attic worked with the rest of the home.

The project took two days.

By the time we finished, Anna had a clean, restored attic—and she was ecstatic with the work.

Her home is now comfortable, and the AC doesn’t have to work nearly as hard to keep up with the Texas heat.

That was the result she wanted when we first walked through the house together: the filth gone and a home that felt better to live in.

Getting rid of the rats doesn’t get rid of what they leave in your insulation.
