Frisco Attic Upgrade That Helped the House Cool Better
This was one of those attic projects where the insulation technically still existed… but it really was not doing much anymore.
Jim and his wife called us out to their home in Frisco because the house just felt harder to cool than it used to. Pretty common story in North Texas honestly, especially in homes around 15 to 25 years old.
Once we got into the attic, you could tell pretty quick what had happened over the years. The insulation had been flattened down.
Ready to start your insulation project?
Every time somebody walks through an attic, it affects the insulation a little bit. HVAC techs. Electricians. Cable installers. Homeowners storing boxes. It adds up over time. And in this attic, the insulation had been compressed so much in areas that it almost looked like somebody rolled over it with a lawn roller.
Not great.
There was also one section where insulation had previously been removed because of an old water issue. So, part of the home basically had a weak spot sitting right above the ceiling.
That’s usually how these comfort problems start.
The attic was holding a lot of heat
The second issue was ventilation.
Or honestly… lack of ventilation.
The attic was trapping heat badly, and you could feel it the second you got up there. Just heavy stagnant heat sitting in the space. Even with the outside temperature not being terrible that day, the attic felt way hotter than it should have.
Kind of like leaving your car parked in the Texas sun with the windows shut all afternoon.
And when that heat has nowhere to go, it pushes downward into the home all day long. The AC system ends up fighting attic heat instead of just cooling the rooms.
That part mattered.
We didn’t need to remove everything
At first, Jim thought the attic might need a complete insulation removal.
Honestly, we thought it might too before getting fully into it.
But after evaluating everything, the existing insulation still had enough life left in it where a full removal wasn’t necessary. We see this a lot actually. Sometimes insulation is dirty or compressed but still usable as a base layer if it’s dry and uncontaminated.
So instead of tearing everything out, we recommended adding fresh blown-in insulation over the top to restore the proper depth and coverage.
That ended up being the right move for this house.
Adding ventilation made a big difference too
The insulation upgrade alone would have helped.
But the attic still needed a way to move heat out more effectively.
So, we installed a solar attic fan to improve airflow through the attic space and help pull out trapped heat.
Once both systems are working together — insulation and ventilation — the attic starts behaving completely differently.
Better airflow. Less trapped heat. Better support for the HVAC system.
Simple concept, but it works.
And side note… Jim mentioned afterward how surprised he was at how quiet the solar fan was once installed. People always expect them to sound louder for some reason.
Keeping the house clean during the job
One thing Jim and his wife really appreciated was how careful the crew was while working inside the home.
The attic access required us moving through closet areas, carrying hoses and equipment inside, and blowing a pretty large amount of insulation into the attic. So, keeping dust down and protecting the living space was a big priority for us.
Honestly, attic jobs can get messy fast if crews rush through them.
We took our time with this one.
The home feels more balanced now
By the end of the project, the attic had fresh blown-in insulation, restored coverage in the damaged areas, and much better ventilation moving heat out of the space.
The house now has an attic system that’s actually helping the home instead of fighting against it.
Better insulation coverage. Better airflow. Less trapped heat sitting above the ceiling all day.
That was it.
