The Real Problem Had Been Sitting Untouched Above the Ceiling for Years

The AC was running.

The house was unbearably hot.

And the source of the problem had been sitting untouched just above their heads for years.

Nadia and her husband live in an older home in Plano. The house struggled to hold its temperature, especially when the Texas summer heat really kicked in.

The AC kept running harder.

But the house still couldn’t keep up.

Nothing had suddenly broken. This was years of attic neglect slowly catching up with the home.

When I climbed into the attic, the story was everywhere.

Remodeling crews had moved insulation out of the way and never put it back correctly. Some areas were thin. Other sections had no coverage at all. Insulation had fallen away from the places it was supposed to protect.

Every missing section created another place for attic heat to push down into the home.

But the insulation wasn’t the only problem.

The attic was starving for air.

The soffit vents were supposed to bring fresh air in from outside, but there were hardly any. The few that were there were clogged shut.

No fresh air coming in.

No way for the heat and humidity to move out.

It just sat there, building day after day, while the AC downstairs ran harder and harder trying to fight it.

The attic had become so humid that it just hung in the air.

This wasn’t a problem we could fix by dumping more insulation on top.

That would have buried years of neglect under a fresh layer of fiberglass. The attic still wouldn’t have been able to breathe. The heat and humidity still would have been trapped. The AC still would have been fighting the same losing battle.

We had to fix the attic in the right order.

First, we disinfected the areas where mildew and smells had taken hold.

We cleared the clogged soffit vents, added new soffit vents where the home didn’t have enough, and installed baffles to keep those airflow paths from being blocked again.

Now the attic could finally pull in fresh air from below.

Next, we installed a solar attic fan to pull the trapped heat and humidity out through the roof.

Fresh air in.

Hot, humid air out.

Only then did we install new fiberglass insulation across the attic, filling the missing areas and creating an even barrier between the extreme heat above and the rooms where Nadia and her family live.

Within a few hours, we corrected problems that had been building for years.

Now the home is maintaining its temperature better. The attic heat load is down. And the AC is no longer being asked to fight a battle it was never going to win on its own.

That is what years of attic neglect can do.

It rarely announces itself with one dramatic failure. It happens quietly. Insulation gets moved. Vents get clogged. Coverage disappears. Heat and humidity build.

Nobody sees it happening because nobody lives in the attic.

But eventually, you feel it in every hot room and every hour the AC keeps running.
