This Attic Needed A Fresh Start More Than Anything

I almost skipped taking pictures of this one.

From the attic hatch, it just looked like…an attic.

Old insulation.

A little dusty.

Nothing that would’ve made you stop and stare.

But once we got up there, it started making more sense why the homeowner wanted everything removed.

The insulation had definitely seen better days.

It had settled over time, and there were spots where it just wasn’t doing much anymore. Nobody had to convince us it was time to start over.

One of the guys climbed up behind me and asked, “You think we’re vacuuming all of it?”

I looked around and said, “Yep. Might as well do it once and do it right.”

That’s usually how we look at these jobs.

There’s really no shortcut.

If you’re already going through the trouble of removing insulation, you don’t want to leave half of it behind.

We got everything set up and started working our way across the attic.

It’s funny how quiet insulation removal can be.

Most people picture a lot of noise.

Really, after the vacuum gets going, everybody just settles into their own little section and keeps moving.

Every now and then somebody points toward a spot that got missed.

Somebody else drags another hose a little farther.

Then it’s right back to work.

I remember looking at my watch at one point because I thought we’d been up there forever.

It hadn’t even been lunch yet.

Funny how attics do that.

When we finally reached the far end, the difference was easy to see.

Instead of old insulation that had been sitting there for years, the attic floor was clean and ready for whatever came next.

That’s the part I like.

Not because removing insulation is glamorous.

It definitely isn’t.

It’s because you’re giving the house a clean slate.

From there, you can air seal, add new insulation, or make whatever improvements the home actually needs.

The homeowner probably isn’t going to tell friends about the day they had insulation removed.

But I have a feeling they’ll notice the results once everything is finished.

Sometimes the first step toward a more comfortable house is simply getting rid of what’s no longer helping.
