When people think about making their home more comfortable, they usually start with the air conditioner or the insulation. That’s understandable. Those are the things you notice.

Attic ventilation.

Your attic has to breathe.

One way I like to explain it is this…

Your home works like a system. Every part depends on the others doing their job. We don’t usually think about breathing until we have trouble catching our breath. Your attic isn’t much different. It needs a way for fresh air to move in and hot, humid air to move back out.

When that airflow isn’t happening, everything else has to work harder.

There are a few easy signs.

If you’ve ever climbed into your attic and immediately noticed it felt extremely hot.

Humid.

Stale, or heavy, that’s usually a sign something isn’t right.

An attic that’s holding onto heat all day is often hotter than it needs to be. When that happens, your insulation and your air conditioning system end up working overtime just to keep the house comfortable.

That’s something we see pretty regularly.

What we’re looking for.

Whenever we’re evaluating an attic, we aren’t just looking at the insulation.

We’re checking to see if enough air is getting into the attic through the soffit vents and whether enough hot air has a way to escape through the exhaust vents.

A lot of homes don’t have enough intake ventilation. Others have soffit vents that are blocked or clogged over the years. Then we find very little exhaust on top of the roof. The result is usually the same an attic that traps too much heat and humidity.

Sometimes people are surprised when ventilation ends up being part of the conversation instead of simply adding more insulation.

Sometimes it isn’t the air conditioner.

If your home never seems comfortable or your AC feels like it’s constantly running, the problem may not actually be the equipment.

Your attic ventilation could be part of what’s making the entire home comfort system struggle.

That’s why we always look at the whole attic before making recommendations instead of focusing on just one piece.
