Some of it is marketing, sure, but a surprising amount of it holds up, and whether it holds up for you comes down to your particular house and which parts of it get foamed. That second part gets skipped over a lot.
So that’s what we want to walk through here. How the stuff actually works, what separates the two types, what you’re really paying for when you get a quote, and (this is the part most contractors won’t volunteer) the situations where you’d honestly do better spending less on something conventional. What Is Spray Foam Insulation?
At the job site it’s two chemicals kept in separate drums. They meet at the spray gun, hit the surface as a liquid, and swell into foam right in front of you, all within a few seconds. And that expansion is really the whole trick. A fiberglass batt is only ever as good as how carefully someone cut it to fit, and blown-in insulation settles wherever gravity puts it, but foam pushes itself into the cracks and odd gaps and all those awkward little spots around wiring and pipe penetrations that nothing else reaches.
Why should you care about gaps that small? Well, because your house leaks. Every house does. Your furnace warms the air and then a meaningful chunk of that warm air slips right out through hundreds of tiny openings you’d never think to look for, and cold air sneaks in to replace it, and the furnace runs again. Sealing those openings breaks that cycle, or at least slows it way down.
As for where it goes, the honest answer is almost anywhere. Attics and crawl spaces are the big ones for us, but we also spray foam basements, rim joists, exterior walls, garages, pole barns, and plenty of commercial buildings. Not many insulation products can cover that range.
How Does Spray Foam Insulation Work?
Most people, when they picture insulation, picture something slowing heat down as it tries to move through a wall. And that’s correct. But it misses half the story, because a house also loses energy through moving air, all those drafts working their way in around framing and electrical boxes and plumbing runs, and a fiberglass batt does basically nothing to stop moving air. Air goes right through it. Always has.
Foam is different because once it cures, you’ve got an insulating layer and an air barrier in one shot. The material slows heat transfer like any insulation would, but since it expanded into every gap on its way in, it also sealed the leaks. Two problems, one application. In a leaky house that’s an edge the cheaper materials just can’t match, and we’ve had customers call the same week the work was done to say the upstairs finally feels normal. We believe them, too, because the drafts they’d been paying to heat all those years were suddenly gone.
Open-Cell vs. Closed-Cell: Which Type Do You Need?
Plenty of confusion around this part, because “spray foam” is really an umbrella term covering two different products. We get called out to look at jobs where somebody put the wrong one in the wrong place, and it happens more than you’d guess.
Open-Cell Spray Foam
Open-cell is the lighter, spongier one. It expands like crazy, which is exactly what you want for irregular cavities and framing you can barely reach, and as a bonus it soaks up sound remarkably well, so we sometimes put it in interior walls for that reason alone. It also costs less. The catch? Lower R-value per inch, and it doesn’t do much against moisture, so it really belongs in dry interior spots, meaning attics, interior walls, roof decks, that sort of thing.
Closed-Cell Spray Foam
Closed-cell cures are hard and dense. You’re getting roughly twice the R-value per inch compared to open-cell, plus moisture resistance, plus (and people are surprised by this) it actually helps improve the structural integrity of whatever it’s sprayed onto. So this is what we reach for in crawl spaces, basements, exterior walls, pole barns, anywhere dampness is part of the equation. Yes it costs more. In the right application it’s worth every penny, and in the wrong one it’s money you didn’t need to spend, which is kind of the theme of this whole article.

So which one? Depends on the space, the moisture situation, and frankly the budget. A lot of projects end up using both, say closed-cell down in the crawl space where it’s damp and open-cell up in the attic where it isn’t.
Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation
Rather than give you the brochure list, here’s what homeowners actually mention to us after the job’s done, roughly in the order we hear it.
The bills come down. Less air leaking out means shorter run cycles for the furnace and the AC, and how much you save depends almost entirely on how leaky the house was before, which is why the older homes tend to see the most dramatic before-and-after.
The temperatures even out. You know that one room that never matches the rest of the house no matter what you do with the thermostat? Nine times out of ten that’s an insulation or air sealing problem, and foam goes after the cause instead of papering over it.
The air quality improves, which surprises people. But think about it, every air leak is also an entry point for dust and pollen and whatever else is floating around outside, so tightening the envelope cuts down on what makes it indoors.
Moisture behaves better, at least where closed-cell is involved, because condensation needs moving air and foam takes the moving air away. Crawl spaces and basements are where this matters most.
And it’s quieter. Open-cell especially. We’ve had customers foam an interior wall purely to stop hearing the laundry room.
The Drawbacks Nobody Puts in the Brochure
No insulation is right for every job, ours included, and we’d rather you hear the downsides from us now than discover them on your own later.
First, the cost is higher. Foam is noticeably more expensive than fiberglass batts or blown-in cellulose, sometimes a lot more depending on the job, and whether that premium ever pays you back depends on your energy bills, how long you plan to stay in the house, and what problem you’re actually trying to solve. Sometimes the math works beautifully. And sometimes, honestly, a few inches of blown-in attic insulation gets you most of the benefit for a fraction of the money, in which case that’s what you should do.
Second, this is not a DIY project. The chemistry involves two components that have to be mixed at the right ratio and applied at the right temperature, and then the foam has to cure properly. When an install goes wrong you don’t just get weak performance, you can get off-ratio foam that never cures right, smells, and costs a small fortune to rip out. The installer matters at least as much as the material here, maybe more.
Third thing, and we run into this misconception constantly. People assume the whole house needs foam. It almost never does. What a house actually needs depends on how it was built and what’s already up in the attic or behind the walls. Ventilation plays into it too. So does budget, realistically. Very often the smart play is a mix, foam where the air sealing does the heavy lifting and something cheaper everywhere else. And if somebody is pushing foam for every square foot of the place before they’ve even walked through it, that person is trying to close a sale. It’s not advice.
How Much Does Spray Foam Insulation Cost?
Everybody asks this one first. We get it. The trouble is that the honest answer really does depend on the job, and we know exactly how annoying that sounds coming from a contractor. But anyone who quotes you a firm number without seeing the space is guessing, and you shouldn’t trust the guess. What actually moves the price is a handful of things.
Foam type: Closed-cell costs more than open-cell, since you’re paying for the higher R-value and the moisture resistance that comes with it.
Project size: Square footage drives material and labor, obviously. A full attic is a very different job than a run of rim joists.
Thickness: Building codes, your climate, and what you’re trying to accomplish all determine how many inches are recommended.
Access: A tight crawl space takes longer than an open wall, and time is labor cost.
Existing conditions: Old insulation that needs removal, prep work, moisture issues that should be fixed first. Any of these can add to the scope, and sometimes they have to.
One piece of advice when you’re comparing quotes: don’t just look at the bottom-line number. A cheap bid that skips the air sealing or sprays thinner than spec will cost you every single month on the utility bill for as long as you own the house. Is Spray Foam Insulation Worth It?
For a lot of houses, yes. For some, no, and we’ll tell you which is which when we see yours. The strong cases are pretty consistent though: an older, leaky house, rooms that won’t hold temperature, a crawl space or basement with damp air, a pole barn or outbuilding you want to condition. In those situations the air sealing alone does work that no batt can touch, and the comfort difference tends to show up fast, sometimes within days.
The weaker case is a newer, already-tight house where all you really want is a bit more R-value in the attic. There, plain old conventional insulation usually wins on cost, and there’s no shame in that. Which one describes your house is exactly what an evaluation figures out.
When to Call a Professional
A few situations where it’s worth having someone come look. Energy bills climbing with no obvious explanation, that’s one. Rooms that stay hot or cold no matter what the thermostat says. A renovation that’s already got your walls open, which by the way is the cheapest opportunity you will ever have to upgrade to spray foam, so don’t waste it. Or new construction, where getting the envelope right on day one saves you from retrofitting later.
And when you do call someone, remember that a good installer isn’t just a person with a spray rig. Insulation, ventilation, and air sealing behave as one system, and squeezing real performance out of a house means understanding how those three interact in that specific building.
