80027 Strong - The Marshall Fire

To begin, we would be remiss not to mention that our hearts and minds are with each and every member of the Boulder, Louisville, Superior, and surrounding communities whose lives have been impacted by the 2020 Marshall Fire.

We would like to take this opportunity to shed some light on what comes next.  As many of our customers already know - and depending on the proximity of your home to the fires, your home’s insurance company should have, or will be, sending an adjustor out to evaluate your property.  More often than not, this adjustor will recommend that the home needs to be professionally cleaned out and treated where needed.

One of the areas that is most often suggested to treat is the home’s attic insulation.  Why is this the case?  Something that we discuss on here is the importance of an attic’s ventilation.  In this specific circumstance, the same ventilation that is necessary and good for the ecosystem within your attic unfortunately creates a pathway for the toxic air from the fires to travel in.  We’ve evaluated many attics in these areas with resting soot and varying degrees of smoke scent.

This is important due to the nature of what was burned – homes, stores, factories, etc.  Within all of these structures are potentially harmful pollutants to air quality.

Now, why is the removal/replacement of insulation important?  If you recall, insulation works by inserting materials that contain huge amounts of minuscule air pockets within them to slow down airflow.  Given this and the recent events related to the fire, this, too, can work against you as a homeowner, by potentially trapping in those same harmful pollutants.

With this in mind, we hope that the insurance adjustors recommendation to remove/replace the existing insulation makes some more sense to you, as a homeowner.
