A Guide to Home Insulation Installation |Koala Insulation of Twin City

Your home’s insulation helps you maintain a comfortable temperature indoors, which lowers your heating and cooling costs. To be effective, you need proper insulation installed anywhere temperature-controlled parts of the home meet uncontrolled areas. Here are the main parts to pay attention to when planning insulation installation.

Where to Put Insulation in Your Home

1. Attic

The attic is the most important area to properly insulate due to the severe temperature swings experienced in our area. In the Triad area of North Carolina, attics can be over 150 degrees in the summer, especially if they aren’t properly ventilated.  As it isn’t a conditioned space, in the winter attics are typically will be as cold at night as the temperature is outside.  It makes an especially big difference in winter, since heat rises and can easily escape through your roof. Where to put the insulation depends on the design of your attic. If it’s a finished space or receives air from your HVAC system, then you need to place the insulation in your rafters, essentially including the attic in the temperature-controlled portion of the home. If the attic is unfinished, then the insulation should go at floor level. A loose fill material such as fiberglass, cellulose or foam can go in this area and is easy to place.

2. Basement and Crawlspaces

Basement- An unfinished, unconditioned basement is a common source for drafts and cold floors.  If your basement ceiling isn’t insulated and properly sealed, it could be impacting the efficiency of your HVAC system.

Crawlspace- Crawlspaces are a common source for cold drafts and floors as well as moisture issues.  A properly insulated and sealed crawlspace can not only help keep you warm in the winter but prevent undesirable smells and humidity from entering your house.

3. Exterior Walls

While walls can be a source for unwanted hot and cold temperatures, they aren’t as easy to insulate after the house is built and the wall coverings are installed.  We recommend having an insulation professional inspect your walls to see if there are options available to better insulated this space.   With drywall, or other wall coverings being in place, the only way to insulate a wall is by drilling a hole for access or taking down the wall covering.  As this isn’t an ideal solution, your professional can provide you with other options on how to better insulate your house
