Cold Room Above the Garage… and How to Fix It

February 10, 2023
Living space above a garage is a popular home layout in St. Louis. While the square footage is efficient, the energy conservation may not be. Cold in the winter and hot in the summer is a common story for these types of homes, and if that's your house, keep reading to learn how to fix it!
How to fix a cold room above a garage:
1. Upgrade Garage Ceiling Insulation
A thin layer of batt insulation will pass a code inspection, but isn't enough to keep the cold weather out of your living space. To achieve comfort, you will need a higher R-value batt, spray foam, or dense-packed insulation.
2. Air Seal Garage Ceiling
A thermal camera can help identify problem areas where air is leaking between the garage and the room above it. Air Sealing is a cost effective way to keep those drafts from making their way into your home.
3. Upgrade Exterior Wall Insulation
Keeping the garage warmer will in turn keep the room above it warmer. Upgrading the exterior walls of the garage will improve comfort in both the garage and the living space over the garage. Inspect the living space exterior walls as well to identity if a wall insulation upgrade will benefit in the living space. Whether the exterior walls are finished with drywall or unfinished, there are solutions to improve the insulation such as batt insulation or cellulose dense-packing.
