Solar Attic Fans Going Up Across Savannah, GA

We’ve been spending a little more time on roofs around Savannah lately.

Solar attic fans are going in on homes across the area through our partnership with Attic Depot, and honestly, Savannah is a pretty good place for them. We get plenty of sun and anybody who has been in an attic here during the summer knows how hot they get.

Really hot.

We were on a roof recently getting another one installed and you could feel the heat coming off the shingles. That kind of day where your tools are hot when you pick them up and you’re looking for any little bit of shade you can find.

Savannah Attics Hold a Lot of Heat

At first glance, a homeowner might think their insulation is the whole problem when certain rooms stay warmer than the rest of the house. And sometimes it is.

But not always.

We get into these attics and there can be plenty of insulation up there, but the attic itself is holding a ton of heat. It just sits up there. On some homes you can almost feel it hit you when you get through the attic opening.

That’s where ventilation comes into the conversation.

Putting the Savannah Sun to Work

One thing I like about the solar attic fans we’re installing with Attic Depot is that they’re pretty straightforward.

The sun is already beating down on the roof and heating everything up. The fan uses that sunlight to help power ventilation and move some of that hot attic air out.

Simple idea, really.

For this particular install, we got up on the roof, figured out the right placement and started getting the opening ready. From the ground it probably doesn’t look like a very involved job. Up on the roof is a different story.

Measure twice. Then probably check it one more time.

Nobody wants the wrong hole cut in a roof.

We’re Seeing These Go In All Over Savannah

We’re starting to do more of these around Savannah and the surrounding communities, including Pooler and Richmond Hill.

Every house is a little different though. I say that all the time because it’s true. We can look at two houses on the same street and find completely different things happening in the attic.

One may need more insulation. Another has air leaks everywhere. Another one has decent insulation but could use some help getting that attic heat out.

Sometimes it’s all three.

That’s why we’d rather actually get up there and look instead of guessing from the driveway.

Insulation and Ventilation Kind of Go Together

We obviously talk about insulation a lot around here. It’s what we do.

But when we’re looking at an attic, we’re looking at more than just how deep the insulation is. We want to see what’s actually going on up there and what makes sense for that particular house.

A solar attic fan can be part of that.

It isn’t some magic fix where we put one on the roof and suddenly every issue with the house disappears. I wouldn’t tell somebody that. But in the right attic, getting some of that trapped hot air moving out instead of just sitting there makes sense.

Especially around here.

One More Savannah Roof Done

Once we had this fan installed and everything buttoned back up, that was pretty much it.

Another solar attic fan up and working, and another Savannah attic with a little more help dealing with our Georgia heat. We’ve got more of these going in through our Attic Depot partnership, so I have a feeling we’re going to be spending quite a bit more time on roofs.
