Early Morning Insulation Removal in Coffee Bluff Savannah

Some jobs stick with you for reasons that have nothing to do with insulation.

This one started before sunrise down in Coffee Bluff. The fog was sitting low across the neighborhood and you could barely see the next house over in some spots. Quiet morning. Cool air. The kind of Savannah morning that disappears once the sun gets up.

We were there to remove old attic insulation before an electrician started work for the homeowner.

We thought it might be a quick cleanup

When we first looked at it, I honestly thought this would be a pretty straightforward removal.

Then we got up into the attic.

There was more old material than it looked like from the access hatch. Happens all the time. You peek your head in and think one thing, then twenty minutes later you’re realizing it’s a different story entirely.

Not terrible. Just more than expected.

The electrician needed to see everything

The homeowner already had electrical work scheduled for this week.

The problem was the insulation was covering everything. Wiring runs. Junction areas. All of it.

You can’t really work efficiently when you’re digging through insulation trying to find what you’re looking for. The electrician needed a clean attic so he could actually see what he was working on.

That was it.

So, our job this week was getting everything cleared out and ready.

And the fog never really left

I kept looking out toward the street through the morning.

The fog hung around longer than I expected.

Not important to the project. Just something I noticed.

You could hear trucks moving around nearby but couldn’t always see them. Kind of felt like the neighborhood was still waking up while we were already halfway through the removal.

Funny how certain jobs are remembered for little details like that.

The homeowner said something we hear a lot

At one point the homeowner looked up into the attic and said: “I had no idea there was that much insulation up there.”

We hear some version of that all the time.

Most people don’t spend much time thinking about what’s above their ceiling until somebody has to work up there. Then suddenly they realize how much material has been sitting there for years.

Sometimes decades.

A quick side note

This doesn’t really have anything to do with insulation removal, but Coffee Bluff has some of my favorite morning views anywhere around Savannah.

Savannah homeowners know what I’m talking about.

You get down toward the water early enough and everything just looks different.

Anyway.

Back to the attic.

Friday we’ll be right back

Once the electrician finishes what he needs to do this week, we’ll be heading back to install fresh fiberglass insulation.

New insulation. Clean attic. Fresh start.

Same idea said differently.

The old material had done its job for a long time, but it was time for something better. Kind of like replacing worn tires before they become a problem.

The attic will be ready. The electrician can work without fighting through insulation. The homeowner gets a fresh layer of fiberglass when we’re finished.

Simple project, really.

And standing out there in the fog that morning, loading up the removal equipment, I remember thinking we’d be back before the week was over. Sure enough, we’ll be right back on Friday to finish it up.
