An Attic Project That Needed Good Timing in Mount Prospect
This one was really about timing
It actually started with light fixtures
The homeowner in Mount Prospect wasn’t calling because the house was uncomfortable.
Ready to start your insulation project?
Wasn’t calling about high energy bills either.
He wanted new light fixtures installed in four bedrooms.
That’s it.
At least that’s how it started.
The electrician needed access through the attic, which meant the insulation had to come out first. Once we got into conversations about scheduling, the project became less about insulation and more about making sure everybody could work without getting in each other’s way.
We thought we’d be in and out
I remember looking at the schedule and thinking this would be pretty straightforward.
Remove insulation.
Electrician comes in.
Put insulation back.
Done.
Then real life showed up.
Not in a bad way. Just normal contractor stuff. Coordinating multiple companies always takes a little more effort than people expect. Everybody has jobs running. Everybody has appointments moving around.
Nothing unusual.
Still takes planning.
The attic looked strange
After we finished the removal, the attic looked almost bigger.
Hard to explain.
When you’ve spent years seeing insulation covering every surface, an empty attic almost feels unfinished. You start noticing things that normally disappear into the background. A random piece of framing. Old markings on the wood. Little things.
I noticed one section of roof decking that looked newer than the surrounding wood.
No reason.
Just something I remember seeing.
And honestly, this is where being small helps
A lot of homeowners assume bigger companies are automatically easier to work with.
Sometimes yes.
Sometimes no.
One thing I’ve always liked about being part of a smaller company is that we can adapt when projects don’t fit perfectly into a neat schedule.
This project definitely didn’t fit neatly into a schedule.
We removed insulation early in the week, stepped away, waited for the electrical work, then came back later for air sealing and re-insulation.
Two trips.
One project.
Worth it.
Somewhere in the middle we were just waiting
And that’s the funny part.
For a couple days there wasn’t really any insulation work happening at all.
The electrician was doing his thing.
We were doing other jobs.
The homeowner was probably just hoping everyone stayed on schedule.
I would’ve been.
Contractors coming and going from a house can feel a little chaotic sometimes.
Then we came back and finished it
Once the lighting work was complete, we returned to air seal and install new insulation.
The attic was ready.
That’s probably the simplest way to put it.
Ready.
The wiring was done. The fixtures were in. The attic had a clean slate, and now we could put everything back the way it should be.
Well…better than it was before.
Not every attic project starts with insulation
I’ve thought about that job a few times since we finished it.
Most people assume we spend our days talking about insulation levels and energy efficiency. Sometimes we do.
Sometimes we’re helping make a lighting project possible.
Sometimes we’re working around plumbers.
Sometimes roofers.
This week it happened to be an electrician.
Funny how often home improvement projects overlap.
The homeowner got the new lighting he wanted, the attic was properly air sealed and re-insulated afterward, and everybody managed to stay out of each other’s way. That’s a win in my book.
