Inspect Your Attic Insulation Before Summer Northern IL
Should you inspect your attic insulation before summer?
This came up before it even got hot
We were out at a place near Rockford.
Ready to start your insulation project?
Homeowner said the AC hadn’t even kicked into full gear yet, but something felt off. House just wasn’t holding temperature the way it should. Not terrible. Just… off.
We hear that a lot this time of year.
First look didn’t seem like much
Climbed up into the attic and nothing jumped out right away.
There was insulation. It wasn’t completely bare or anything. But once you move around a bit, you start noticing the inconsistencies. Some areas were packed down, others looked thin. A couple spots had small gaps where you could actually feel warm air pushing through.
That part mattered.
Why this shows up before summer hits
Spring is kind of the warning sign.
Temps start creeping up, but you’re not fully relying on the AC yet. So, when the attic isn’t doing its job, the house starts reacting early. Rooms feel uneven. Air feels heavier. You’ll notice it more in the afternoon when the sun’s been sitting on the roof all day.
Kind of like your car heating up before you even turn the AC on.
Not great.
What we actually found once we slowed down
There were a few things going on.
Insulation had settled over time. Some airflow issues around the edges. Nothing dramatic, but all of it together was letting heat move where it shouldn’t. And once summer hits, that attic turns into an oven.
You could already feel it building up even though it wasn’t that hot outside yet.
Honestly, I almost thought it wouldn’t be that bad when we first got up there.
What we did to fix it
We started by sealing up the problem areas.
Then we evened everything out and added fresh blown-in insulation where it was lacking. Nothing overdone. Just brought it back to where it should be. Took us most of the day. Maybe a little longer than planned because we kept catching small things along the way.
And we kept catching them.
Homeowner came up at the end and said, “So this would’ve been a lot worse in a month or two, right?”
Yeah. Probably.
…and this is where people wait too long
They wait until July.
By then the attic is pushing 120–130 degrees easy. Your AC is running nonstop, and the house still won’t cool evenly. At that point, you’re reacting instead of preventing it.
We see this a lot. People wait. Then wait again.
That’s usually how it goes.
One small thing that stood out
There was a bedroom upstairs that always felt warmer.
Not by a lot. Just enough that you’d notice it when you walked in from the hallway. That kind of inconsistency almost always traces back to the attic. It’s never random.
Small detail, but it told us a lot.
If you’re thinking about it
If your house has been feeling a little off lately, it’s worth taking a look before summer really kicks in.
You can check out our reinsulate services to see what we typically look for when we come out. Every house is a little different, but the patterns repeat.
We wrapped this one up, cleaned everything out, and moved on to another job over in Crystal Lake. Nothing flashy. Just fixing what would’ve turned into a bigger problem in a few weeks.
