Why is Humidity Important in Your Home?

Here in North Florida, it can be a humid rainforest environment one day and a frosty freezing day the next.  These extreme fluctuations in temperature and precipitation can impact your home and your wallet.  Elevated moisture levels in you home can affect the integrity of your home’s insulation.  Insulation that has been exposed to high levels of moisture can become problematic over time.  The insulation can become compressed and depending on what type you have it can even harbor mold and mildew.  Once the insulation is compromised it can contribute to the higher humidity within the structure.

Preventative Measures

There are several actions you can take to mitigate the moisture in your home. 

1. Air sealing:  Windows and doors as well as light fixtures and wiring / plumbing accesses in the structure need to be sealed.
2. Vents:  Bathroom and kitchen vents need to be routed to the exterior of the home and not vented to the attic space.
3. Proper insulation levels help control the air quality of the home.  R-38 is the minimum in Bay County and surrounding areas that is approximately 13 inches of insulation.
4. Attic ventilation can help tremendously.  Adding a Solar Attic fan can save up to 30% on your energy cost while improving air quality in the home.
