Should You Remove Old Insulation in Augusta, GA Homes?

Funny enough…this might be the question we hear the most people usually expect us to climb into the attic, look around for about thirty seconds, and immediately know what needs to happen.

Sometimes we do.

Sometimes we absolutely don’t.

I had a homeowner here in Augusta ask me not too long ago, “Be honest…are you guys going to tell me it all needs to come out no matter what?”

I laughed because I understood why he asked. There’s a lot of skepticism these days.

I told him, “If it doesn’t need to come out, I’m not going to tell you it does.”

That’s just how we’ve always operated.

I’ve been wrong before

One thing I’ve learned after looking at more attics than I can count is not to make up my mind before I actually get up there.

I’ve pulled into driveways thinking, This house is from the ’70s. We’re probably doing a full removal today.

Then I climb into the attic…

And it isn’t nearly as bad as I expected.

The insulation might be a little uneven. Maybe somebody moved some around years ago to run electrical lines. Maybe there’s one section that’s thinner than the rest.

But overall?

Still usable.

Then there are the jobs that go exactly the opposite.

The attic hatch opens and before I even crawl all the way inside, I know this one’s going to be a bigger project than we thought.

Not because of one thing.

Just…everything.

Every attic kind of has its own personality

That probably sounds strange if you’ve never been in one.

But it’s true.

Some attics are surprisingly clean. Dry wood. No strange smells. You can tell somebody has taken care of the house for years.

Others…

You notice the dust floating through your flashlight before you notice anything else.

Sometimes there’s insulation that’s been flattened from people crawling across it over the years. Sometimes there are old trails where rodents have been running back and forth. We’ve found forgotten storage boxes, an old rocking chair once, and enough Christmas decorations to fill another attic.

None of that has anything to do with insulation.

It’s just funny what sticks in your memory after you’ve done this for a while.

Augusta homes are all a little different

We work in Augusta quite a bit, but we’re also in Evans, Grovetown, and nearby communities all the time.

You’ll see two houses built around the same time on the same street.

One attic looks great.

The next one looks like nobody’s been up there since Jimmy Carter was president.

That’s why I never like giving somebody an answer over the phone.

Could I guess?

Sure.

I’d rather not.

I’d rather actually look and tell you what I’m seeing instead of what I think I might find.

It only takes a few minutes to get a pretty good idea of what’s going on.

Sometimes removing it is the best decision. Sometimes it isn’t.

There isn’t a rule.

If the insulation is dry, clean, and still doing its job, we’ll tell you.

If pests have been living in it, moisture has gotten to it, or it’s simply reached the point where starting over makes more sense, we’ll tell you that too.

Either way, you’re getting the same answer we’d give our own family.
