Best Insulation for Chapin SC Homes: Foam vs Fiberglass

Midlands > Blog > Best Insulation for Chapin SC Homes: Foam vs Fiberglass

This one started as a simple quote

We were out in Chapin the other day, homeowner just wanted a price. Said they were deciding between spray foam and fiberglass and didn’t want to make the wrong call.

We see this a lot.

Nothing looked terrible at first. House wasn’t that old, insulation was technically there. But the complaint was the same as always… upstairs hotter than it should be, system running longer than expected.

It’s usually not a “which is better” question

People want a straight answer. Foam or fiberglass.

Honestly, it depends. That’s usually how it goes.

Because the problem isn’t always the material. It’s how the house is behaving. Where air is moving, where heat is sitting, what’s actually happening up in the attic.

Kind of like asking if a jacket is better than a hoodie… depends what you’re dealing with.

What we saw in this attic

Attic hit you right away. Heat just sitting there, no movement.

Fiberglass batts were laid out, but uneven. Some spots compressed, some areas with gaps. You could tell pretty quick it wasn’t sealing anything.

We thought that at first ventilation might be the bigger issue. Turned out air leakage was doing most of the damage. That was it.

Where spray foam makes more sense

Spray foam isn’t magic, but it fixes a very specific problem.

Air movement.

If your attic is letting hot air push down into the house all day, foam shuts that down. It seals everything up. In homes around Chapin and even over toward Irmo, that’s a big deal because heat and humidity don’t just sit still.

Not great when your insulation can’t stop it.

Where fiberglass still works

Fiberglass isn’t bad. People jump to that conclusion way too fast.

If the attic is already sealed properly and you just need better coverage or depth, fiberglass can absolutely do the job. It’s more about adding resistance than stopping airflow.

And in some cases, that’s all you need.

This part gets overlooked a lot

Homeowner asked if they should just upgrade everything to foam and be done with it.

We paused on that.

Because not every house needs full spray foam. Sometimes it’s overkill. Sometimes it doesn’t fix the actual issue. That part matters.

We ended up walking them through both options based on what we saw, not just what sounds better.

Quick side note about cost

Yeah, foam costs more.

But it’s not just about price upfront. It’s how the house performs after. If your system runs less and the house holds temperature better, that gap starts to close over time.

Still… not always the right move.

How this one played out

We ended up recommending targeted spray foam in the problem areas and improving the rest with proper insulation coverage. Didn’t need to go all-in on one or the other.

Took most of the day. By the time we wrapped up, the attic felt completely different. Less heat hanging around, less air movement.

Homeowner said it felt quieter too, which happens sometimes. Kind of one of those things you don’t expect.

If you’re in Chapin, Lexington, or anywhere around the Midlands trying to figure out what insulation actually makes sense for your home, it’s usually not as simple as foam vs fiberglass.
