5 Signs of Bad Insulation in Midlands SC Homes

Midlands > Blog > 5 Signs of Bad Insulation in Midlands SC Homes

Walked into it thinking it was just the AC

We were out in Columbia earlier this week and the homeowner was pretty convinced their AC was on its way out. Said it ran all day, never really caught up, especially upstairs. Nothing crazy at first. Thermostat looked normal, system was running, air coming through the vents… but the house still felt warm.

You could tell pretty quick it wasn’t the unit.

The attic told the real story

As soon as we popped the attic hatch, it hit us. That stale, hot air smell… kind of heavy. It was mid-afternoon and you could feel the heat just sitting up there, not moving.

Insulation was there, technically. But it was uneven, compressed in spots, and thin in others. Kind of like trying to use a blanket with holes in it. Doesn’t really matter how good the AC is at that point.

First sign: rooms that never feel the same

Upstairs was hot. Downstairs felt fine.

We see this a lot around Lexington and Irmo. Homeowners will say one part of the house is always off, and they just deal with it. That’s usually how it goes.

It’s not always airflow. Sometimes it’s just insulation not doing its job anymore.

Second sign: energy bills creeping up

They mentioned their bill had been climbing the past year. Not a huge spike all at once, just slowly getting worse.

Honestly, that’s one of the biggest tells. When insulation breaks down, your system works longer and harder. You don’t notice it day to day… until you do.

And then it’s every month.

Third sign: insulation looks fine… but isn’t

This is where people get thrown off.

Because from the attic entrance, everything looked “okay.” Light layer, nothing missing. But once we moved around, you could see gaps, dips, and areas where it had settled way down.

We ended up recommending a full attic insulation upgrade for their Columbia home just to bring it back to where it should’ve been.

That part mattered.

Fourth sign: your system never shuts off

Not literally, but close.

They said it would run almost nonstop during the afternoon. That constant hum in the background… you stop noticing it after a while. But it’s there.

And it’s usually not because the system is undersized. It’s because the house can’t hold temperature.

This part always comes up

Kind of random, but the homeowner asked if adding a bigger unit would fix it.

We hear that a lot.

It’s like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in it. Bigger system just means faster loss. Not great.

Fifth sign: it just feels… off

Hard to explain, but people know.

The air feels different. Rooms don’t stay comfortable. Some spots are drafty, others feel heavy. It’s not one big issue, it’s a bunch of small ones stacking up.

We actually thought at first it might’ve been a ventilation issue too. Turned out that it was mostly insulation just breaking down over time. That was it.

How this one wrapped up

Took us a few hours to get everything cleaned up and properly installed. Once we evened things out and brought the levels up, you could already feel the difference before we left.

Homeowner just kind of stood there for a second and said, “Yeah… that already feels better.”

That’s usually how it goes.

If your house in the Midlands, Columbia, or anywhere nearby feels like it’s working harder than it should, there’s a good chance your insulation isn’t doing what it’s supposed to anymore.
