Knee Walls First, Then We Blew This Madison Attic to R60

We were working in an attic here in Madison and the plan was to bring the insulation up to R60.

Before we started blowing anything in though, we had some knee walls to deal with.

So that’s where we started.

We spray foamed those first.

It would’ve been pretty backwards to blow a bunch of new insulation into the attic and then try to get back in there to spray the knee walls afterward.

We like to make our lives a little easier when we can.

Get the Foam Done While We Can Still Move Around

Attic work isn’t exactly roomy to begin with.

Once you start blowing insulation and get it up to R60, there’s a whole lot more stuff to crawl through.

So, Koala Insulation of Madison got the spray foam work out of the way first.

We could still see where we were stepping.

That’s always helpful.

Got the knee walls sprayed, checked everything over and then started getting ready for the blown-in.

Different part of the job, different equipment.

Same attic.

Then Came a Lot of Blown-In Insulation

R60 takes some material.

You start blowing and just work your way across the attic.

There’s not much exciting to say about that part.

One guy is feeding the machine.

Another guy is up in the attic with the hose.

And you keep going.

Every once in a while you stop and check where you’re at.

Then keep going again.

By the time we’re finished, the attic looks a whole lot different than when we crawled into it.

And you definitely don’t want to drop a tool in there.

Good luck finding that thing.

This Is Why We Look at the Whole Attic

Sometimes somebody calls and says, “I need more insulation.”

Okay.

Maybe.

But we still want to get up there and look around before we start blowing insulation everywhere.

There might be knee walls like this house had.

There might be something else that needs attention first.

Every attic is a little different.

That’s why I don’t like assuming what a house needs before we’ve actually looked at it.

For this one, the order was easy.

Spray foam the knee walls.

Then bring the attic to R60.

That’s what we did.

Another Madison Attic Done

Nothing crazy about this project.

Just one of those jobs where doing things in the right order makes the job go a whole lot smoother.

The knee walls are spray foamed.

The blown-in insulation is in.

The attic is now at R60.

Pack up the hoses and move on to the next one.
