Spray Foam Installation at the Wisconsin Governor’s New Mansion

Some jobs make you stop for a second before you unload the trailer.

I don’t usually think much about an address before we get there.

You punch it into the GPS, grab a coffee if there’s time, and head out.

This one was different.

Somebody in the truck looked at the work order and said, “Wait…is this that house?”

It was.

We were headed over to install closed-cell spray foam at the Wisconsin Governor’s new mansion.

Pretty neat, honestly.

Then again, after about five minutes, it just turned back into another job. That’s kind of how construction works.

It was still just framing and plywood.

If you’ve never walked through a house before drywall goes up, it almost feels bigger than it will later.

Everything echoes.

You can see from one end of the house to the other.

I always think that’s interesting.

It was one of those mornings where it wasn’t too hot yet. We unloaded the trailer, rolled hoses toward the house, and got everything ready before the rest of the site really got moving.

There were a few other trades around, but everybody sort of stayed in their own lane.

Pretty typical.

I actually thought we’d be in and out.

Looking at the outside of the house, I figured this would be fairly straightforward.

Once we got inside…

Not really.

There were quite a few areas that needed a little more attention than I expected. Nothing wrong with the build. Just more detail than you notice from the driveway.

That’s usually how it goes.

People think insulation is the last thing that happens before drywall. It isn’t. There’s quite a bit that goes into making sure everything is ready before we ever start spraying.

And once we do start…

Well, there’s no pause button.

The part most people never see.

When people hear “spray foam,” they picture someone pulling a trigger and covering everything.

I guess I used to think that years ago too.

The truth is most of our day is looking.

Checking.

Walking back.

Looking again.

One of the guys caught a spot I walked right past the first time.

Glad he did.

Little things like that matter more than people realize.

Actually…that’s probably not the right way to say it.

They matter to us.

Because once the drywall goes up, nobody is going to see the insulation again.

We know it’s there though.

Driving home, we talked about it for a minute.

On the way back somebody finally said what everybody had been thinking.

“That’s probably not a job we’ll forget.”

Probably not.

It’s not because it belongs to the Governor.

It’s because it’s fun being trusted with a project like that. You remember those.

Tomorrow we’ll probably be in someone’s attic in Middleton or cleaning out insulation in Fitchburg, and honestly we’ll approach it exactly the same way.

Every homeowner deserves the same attention we’d give a project like this.
