Fiberglass Blown-In Insulation Above a Garage in Waunakee, WI

Garages are one of those areas of a home where insulation can get overlooked. Especially the space above them. You don’t spend much time looking up there, so it’s pretty easy to forget about until you realize just how much heat or cold that area is dealing with.

Our crew at Koala Insulation of Madison recently completed this project in Waunakee, Wisconsin, where our crew installed fiberglass blown-in insulation in the attic space above a garage.

Pretty straightforward job, but definitely an area worth insulating.

Adding Fiberglass Insulation Above the Garage

For this project, we used blown-in fiberglass insulation to build up a nice, consistent layer across the attic floor.

One of the things we like about blown-in insulation is how well it works in spaces like this. An attic isn’t just one big open box. There are trusses everywhere, framing, tight spots and plenty of areas that would be difficult to cover evenly with other types of insulation.

With blown-in fiberglass, we can work around all of that.

You can see it in the photo from this job. The fiberglass settles around the framing and gives us coverage across the attic floor without having to work around every individual truss with batts.

Why Insulate the Attic Over a Garage?

A garage may not be conditioned like the inside of the house, but that doesn’t mean insulation above it isn’t doing anything.

Here in Waunakee and the Madison area, an attic can see some pretty extreme temperatures throughout the year. Cold Wisconsin winters are the obvious one. Then summer comes around and the roof and attic heat up again.

Adding insulation helps slow that heat transfer.

This can be especially important when there is living space next to or above the garage. Even when there isn’t, insulating the garage attic can still help create a better thermal barrier between the garage and the roof.

It’s one of those areas where every home is a little different, so we like to actually look at the space before deciding what makes sense.

Blown-In Fiberglass Gets Into the Tight Areas

This attic had a lot of framing to work around. That’s normal, but it’s also where blown-in fiberglass really comes in handy.

Rather than leaving little gaps around trusses and harder-to-reach areas, the fiberglass can be blown throughout the space and built up to a consistent depth.

No complicated story with this one. The garage attic needed insulation, fiberglass blown-in was a good fit, and our crew got it covered.
