We Didn’t Sell Insulation That Day. We Sold A Cooler House.

I was thinking about this job on the drive home.

Not because it was difficult.

It really wasn’t.

The homeowner kept talking about the upstairs.

Not the attic.

The upstairs.

He said by late afternoon everybody seemed to drift downstairs because it was the only place that felt comfortable. I asked which bedroom was the worst.

He laughed.

“Depends who you ask.”

Fair enough.

Families usually have a different answer for that.

Anyway…

We popped open the attic hatch and climbed up.

I’ve been in enough attics around Las Vegas that I don’t expect them to feel good, but this one got my attention pretty quick. It was still morning and it already felt like somebody had left a space heater running up there.

I remember thinking…

This is going to be miserable by two o’clock.

The insulation had definitely settled over the years. There wasn’t much left standing proud anymore. Some spots looked okay until you really looked across the attic, then you could see how uneven everything had become.

Nothing was damaged.

Nothing was soaking wet.

Nobody had animals living up there.

It just needed more insulation.

Sometimes that’s the whole story.

One of the guys asked me if we had enough hose to reach the far corner.

I told him we did.

We didn’t.

Had to drag another section up into the attic.

Not a big deal.

Just one of those little things that happens on jobs.

By the time we got rolling, everything moved pretty smoothly. We blew in about 15 inches of fresh insulation across the attic, taking our time to get even coverage instead of racing through it.

There’s really no shortcut for that part.

You look across the attic.

Walk a little farther.

Look again.

Fix a thin spot.

Repeat.

Probably not very exciting to watch.

Definitely not exciting to watch.

When we climbed back down, the homeowner asked the question we hear all the time.

“You’ll really be able to tell?”

I said I thought so.

Not because I’m trying to sell somebody something.

Because we’ve been back to enough houses over the years to know what happens when an attic in Las Vegas finally has the insulation it should’ve had in the first place.

The air conditioner gets a fighting chance.

The upstairs usually doesn’t feel like a completely different climate.

And when it’s 110 degrees outside, you’ll take every little advantage you can get.

I don’t know if they’ll ever think about that insulation again.

Honestly, I hope they don’t.

I’d rather they notice they’re comfortable and forget we were ever there.
