Carlos Kept Getting High Energy Bills. The Problem Was Hiding at the Edges of His Attic.
Carlos was doing what he could to keep his energy bills under control.
It wasn’t working.
Month after month, the bills were still higher than he thought they should be.
Ready to start your insulation project?
So, he called Koala Insulation of Las Vegas to take a look at the attic.
Once we got up there, we found something homeowners probably aren’t going to spot from the attic hatch.
There were significant gaps in the insulation.
And some of the worst areas were way out around the eaves and edges.
The Middle of the Attic Isn’t the Only Part That Matters
When most people picture attic insulation, they’re probably thinking about that big open area in the middle.
That’s the easy part to see.
But insulation needs to reach all the way out toward the edges too.
Carlos had areas around the perimeter where the coverage just wasn’t there.
Those are also some of the harder spots to reach.
You can’t just stand in the middle of the attic and dump more insulation in. You’ve got to get the material back into those tighter areas and make sure you’re actually filling the spaces that were missed.
That’s what our crew did.
We Got Fiberglass Into the Tight Spots
We installed blown-in fiberglass insulation throughout the areas that needed more coverage.
And we paid particular attention to the eaves, edges and cavities where Carlos had those gaps.
That’s one reason blown-in insulation works well for a job like this.
We can get it into spaces that would be pretty difficult to cover evenly with large pieces of batt insulation.
Little by little, those bare and under-insulated areas disappeared.
By the time we finished, Carlos had consistent insulation coverage across the attic instead of good coverage in some places and big gaps in others.
His AC Had Been Fighting the Las Vegas Heat
Carlos knew what he was paying every month.
What he couldn’t see was what was happening above his ceiling.
His cooling system was trying to keep the house comfortable while the attic insulation had holes in its coverage.
In Las Vegas, that’s not doing the AC any favors.
The insulation upgrade gave the home a much better thermal barrier between the living space and that hot attic.
And Carlos noticed the difference where it really counts.
His cooling costs came down.
Sometimes You Have to Look in the Corners
This job is a good example of why we don’t just glance into an attic and look at the insulation closest to the access.
That doesn’t tell you the whole story.
The middle can look fine while the edges are a completely different situation.
Carlos had been paying those high energy bills without knowing there were significant gaps hiding farther out in the attic.
Once we found them, the fix was pretty straightforward.
Get the blown-in fiberglass where it was missing and make sure those tight areas had the coverage they should have had all along.
If your Las Vegas energy bills keep climbing and you can’t figure out why, there may be something above your ceiling worth checking.
