Do I Need to Replace Wet Insulation?

Today’s insulation materials are very durable and many are created to withstand heat, water and fire situations. When a lot water is involved, it can be a bit trickier to navigate.

While many insulation materials are water-resistant or even waterproof, certain instances may call for a removal and replacement in order to ensure your insulation is performing efficiently and continues to be safe for your family.

What Would Cause Wet Insulation?

One of the biggest reasons for wet insulation is a leak somewhere along your roof line. Even the smallest gap can invite water into your attic. As it leaks down your walls and into your insulation, it can eventually soak it through. If the insulation in your attic is batt, blown-in cellulose or open-cell spray foam, it could be rendered ineffective until the water dries out.

In addition, water issues could pop up due to an unexpected basement flood or plumbing problems that aren’t addressed right away.

We also live in a pretty humid climate, so wet insulation could occur from an overload of humid, moist air in your home. As the humid air rises into your attic, it can condense and settle into your insulation.

Concerns About Mold

When insulation gets wet enough, it makes it hard for it to work efficiently. In addition, it can be difficult to dry out if it is in a hard-to-reach part of your home, like behind your walls. If your insulation can’t fully dry out, mildew and mold can become a problem.

Mold can be a health hazard for your entire family and can reduce your indoor air quality. It can also start to degrade your home’s structural integrity over time. It can compromise beams, joists and walls, and the moisture can rust metal over time.

What Should I Do if I Discover Wet Insulation?

Time is of the essence whenever water is concerned in your house. Minor issues can usually be handled on your own with a fan and by circulating the air. If your insulation is completely soaked through or hard to get to on your own, give us a call right away.

We can assess the situation and determine if a removal and replacement is in your best interest.

Starting fresh can usually guarantee a fresh start without the risk of lingering moisture or mold growth. We can also address the area of concern if you have an air leak somewhere! Sealing up this problem can stop the water leak from happening again.
