Will spray foam insulation keep pests out of your home?

In any home, it’s not unusual to notice the presence of pests and rodents particularly mice! An undiagnosed rodent infestation can quickly jump from a few little cute mice or squirrels looking for a home to having the rodents completely take over the upper half of your home. They cannot only destroy your attic, but they can also ruin appliances, etc.  In colder weather, it will often drive rodents into warm places such as your attic and roof. The attic is the ideal location for rodents because they have wires to chew through, eat through the existing insulation! Imagine trying to sell your home with an existing rodent issue! The main thing about pests and rodents is PREVENTION IS KEY!!!! We can’t stress this enough.

Let’s talk about spray foam for mice control.

The next thing you will need to do is seal up any openings so there are no more entry points for them to come inside, nobody wants uninvited guests, right? One of the most common entry points is the large cracks on the roof and foundation of the home. Once these minimal problems are taken care of you can then set up your spray foam insulation job to prevent the issue from reoccurring. 

So, will spray foam insulation help?

The simple answer is YES! Spray foam insulation will work to keep out mice and other pests, but it is more of a preventive, and it will not work if rodents are already present. Proper removal of the previous insulation to remove all rodents is a necessity. The most important thing is to understand is where the pests are coming from. The most common places for presets like rodents, bats, or bugs to get into a home are the spots with the most air leaks. Some examples would be the crawl space, openings in the attic, etc.  When pests are running across the roof the little mice will feel the leaking heat and come right on in and make themselves at home! Although spray foam insulation will not cure an existing pest problem it will certainly help prevent the problem in the future!
