Koala Blown In Insulation Materials | KI of Grand Rapids

When it comes to choosing what insulation material is right for your home, it can be confusing and downright overwhelming to figure out what the right decision is! Each insulation material shines in its own way and provides different benefits in different spots around your home.

One insulation type that has a wide variety of uses is called “blown-in insulation,” and we explain some of its unique benefits below.

Fiberglass Blown-In Insulation 101

Blown-in insulation comes in multiple different forms, including fiberglass and cellulose.

Fiberglass is made out of plastic, glass or other raw materials that are all melted down together and spun into long, thin fibers. When you think about fiberglass insulation, those pink batt blankets probably come to mind! This is similar to that except it is left as a loose fill material instead of woven together into a sheet.

Fiberglass is an eco-friendly product due to its high recycled content. In fact, some fiberglass insulation is composed of up to 80% recycled glass! It is lightweight, moisture-resistant and blown onto your space using long tubes that help cover a large area in a short amount of time. It also is resistant to fire thanks to the high glass content that it has.

Cellulose Blown-In Insulation 101

Cellulose insulation is also eco-friendly! Instead of being made out of glass, cellulose blown-in insulation is made out of newspaper, cardboard and certain types of wood. Since these materials are combustible, this insulation is specially treated to resist mold, fire and pests.

Fiberglass is classically irritating to the skin, but cellulose is easy to manage as the materials are all safe to handle. It also has a higher R-value than fiberglass insulation and has a slightly higher fire rating than fiberglass due to the treatments that are added to the material.
