An Introduction to R-Value for Home Insulation | Koala Insulation

If you're getting ready to install new home insulation, you may have encountered the term "R-value." This rating speaks to the material's effectiveness at preventing heat transfer. If you are unfamiliar with this term, below is a brief introduction to the subject.

What Is R-Value?

The "R" in "R-value" stands for "resistance," as in a product's ability to resist heat flow. The higher the value, the greater the material's insulating power. For example, the R-value of closed-cell spray foam is 6.5 per inch, while fiberglass batts and blankets are between 3 and 4. This means an inch of closed-cell insulation is about twice as effective at preventing heat loss or gain as an inch of fiberglass batt. However, be aware that batts are typically at least 3.5 inches thick, which means the overall R-value is around 13.

Why Is It Important?

As you can see with batts above, the R-value is additive. This means that if you combine layers of the same or different materials, the R-value of the group is the sum of the individual layers. Because of this, you can mix and match types to maximize the amount of heat flow resistance you get for the space available.

High resistance to heat flow means that, in winter, indoor warmth won't dissipate outside. Likewise, during summer, outdoor heat won't infiltrate your air-conditioned home. This reduces energy waste, saves you money on heating and cooling bills, and helps your living spaces stay more comfortable all year long.

Beyond that, a well-insulated attic prevents snow on the roof from melting. Snow not only insulates homes, but melted snow flows toward the gutters and eaves, where it freezes and forms ice dams. Ice dams are potentially dangerous to passersby and can damage the roof by pulling at the eaves and trapping excess water against the shingles, causing leaks.
