Controlling Moisture in Your Home

Now that we are in the throes of the colder months, our homes are much more closed up as we hunker down for the chilly season ahead.

Since windows are probably closed and the air conditioner is not running, it is important to watch for any emerging moisture issues in our homes to prevent water damage or mold growth.

Keep Your Humidity Levels in Check

Even if the outside climate is not humid anymore, the environment inside your home sure can be! If you have a fire crackling in your hearth a lot or if you have a well-used space heater, you could be creating moisture troubles.

Investing in a dehumidifier for your home can help keep these levels lower and make your home more comfortable.

Also make sure to fully dry out your bathroom after heavy use, as lingering moisture from showers and baths can lead to water damage troubles over time. Keep a fan going to circulate the air, and consider running a fan throughout your home to keep the air moving all the time.

Ventilate Your Attic

We all know that hot air rises, and what better place to collect than in your attic? If your attic doesn’t have a way to vent the excess hot air, it can build up over time and cause mold growth or excessive moisture troubles.

An attic that is sealed up tight can also cause roof troubles by reducing the life of your shingles and contributing to ice dam formation. Make sure the vents in your attic are working properly and allowing the air to circulate as necessary.

Insulate Your Spaces

It all seems to come back to insulation, doesn’t it? Windows and doors that are not properly insulated are vulnerable to condensation as they continually warm up and cool down throughout the day.

Adding extra insulation or caulking around these areas can help reduce this problem.

You should also make sure your pipe systems are well-insulated, as they can be sources of unwanted condensation or mold growth if your pipes are continually changing temperatures.
