5 Signs Your Home Is Well-Insulated
We all want our homes to be as efficient as possible! With every small upgrade and ever minor change we make towards efficiency, it can be exciting to see it impact your home.
Sometimes the changes are subtle, and other times they can be obvious energy shifts that pay off in a big way. Read below to see if your home is running smoothly and efficiently.
1. Your Energy Bills Are Reasonable
A home that is well-insulated is efficient at controlling your daily temperature. It will slow energy transfer and will keep you cool in the summer and warmer in the winter just by utilizing this process.
If your home isn’t vulnerable to drastic temperature swings, your HVAC system won’t have to work as hard, which means you will use less energy. Less energy = lower energy bill!
2. Your Wall and Floor Temperatures Are Comfortable
Another easy way to tell if your home has an insulation problem is to feel your walls and floors. A well-insulated home should have walls and floors that are the same temperature as the rest of the house.
If your insulation is old, worn-out or has been compromised, the walls and floors will feel cold or damp to the touch. Keep in mind that exterior walls may be cold at times because your insulation is working directly against the elements, but your interior walls should be comfortable.
3. You Don’t Feel Drafts
A drafty house is a direct indication that your house is not insulated properly. Gaps and cracks within your insulation or around windows and doors can easily invite warm or cool air drafts into your home.
If you can walk around your house without catching a chill or feeling randomly warm, you are in good shape.
4. Your Thermostat Is Reliable
Your thermostat should operate as a “set it and forget it” device. You should set it at your preferred temperature(s) and then let your home warm up and cool down naturally throughout the day.
If you find that you are constantly returning to the dial or screen to raise or lower it despite what the reading indicates, it may be because air is escaping out of your house too quickly somewhere.
5. You Don’t Have a Pest Problem
Insulation has many benefits beyond controlling energy transfer, including keeping pests out! A home that is sealed against the elements is going to be able to keep the bugs and neighborhood squirrels and mice out of your home.
If you hear critters in your attic or you are constantly fighting against an ant or beetle problem, an insulation upgrade may be in your future.
