Is Spray Foam Insulation toxic After It Dries?

Spray foam insulation is generally considered to be non-toxic once it dries. However, it is important to understand the chemical make-up of spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation is made from two main components: isocyanate and polyol resin. These two components are mixed at the point of application, and they react chemically to form a foam that expands and hardens.

There are two main types of spray foam insulation: open-cell and closed-cell. Open-cell spray foam is more porous and allows more air to pass through, while closed-cell spray foam is denser and does not allow as much air to pass through.

Open-cell Spray Foam Insulation

Open-cell spray foam insulation typically contains a small amount of isocyanate, which is a chemical that can cause respiratory problems if inhaled. However, the amount of isocyanate in open-cell spray foam is typically very low and does not pose a significant health risk once the foam has dried. Because open-cell spray foam is porous, we at Koala Insulation of Central CT focuses only on Closed-cell spray foam insulation.

Closed-cell Spray Foam Insulation

Closed-cell spray foam typically does not contain any isocyanate. However, it does contain other chemicals that can off-gas, or release fumes, for a period after it is applied. These fumes can cause headaches, and nausea in some people if inhaled in high concentrations. For this reason, we always recommend that our customer leave the house for at least 24 hours after the final closed-cell spray foam application. However, these fumes typically dissipate within a few days and closed-cell spray foam is generally considered to be safe once it has cured completely.

Here are some tips for staying safe around spray foam insulation:

  • Removal all pets from around spray foam insulation area.
  • Continue to keep the area well-ventilated for several days after installation.
  • Discuss any concerns with the insulation company before starting spray foam application.

Final Thoughts…
