Your Attic Insulation in New Mexico Can Save Up to $800 in Gas Rebates

At Koala Insulation of Albuquerque and Santa Fe, we continuously mention how much new and updated insulation and air sealing can save you on regular expenses. Not only does the EPA estimate you can save an average of 15% on your heating and cooling bills, but supporting your HVAC system can reduce maintenance needs and protect you from outdoor pollutants and potential health hazards. But, did you know updated insulation can also earn you gas rebates in New Mexico?

What Are Gas Rebates?

According to New Mexico Gas Company, "insulation added between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022 is available for rebates with our 2021 program." Rebates help increase your return on investment choices by paying back on certain products; they're generally incentives so, in this case, homeowners are encouraged to make the quality of life choices that will not only help themselves but their community.

The New Mexico Gas Rebate Company specifically is offering 25% of the cost when you add attic or roof insulation for up to $800, when “you have a licensed and insured participating contractor add insulation to your home’s attic or roof”. For more information on NMGC’s residential rebate programs and opportunities, visit their website to find even more ways to save on your monthly expenses.

The gas rebates offered by NMGC are separated into two tiers. Tier I offers a rebate of 25% of the cost, up to $800: first, your existing insulation must be under R-11, which is typically about 4 inches or less of material; once you add R-19 insulation or greater, you’re eligible for the Tier I rebate. Tier II still offered a rebate of 25% of the cost, but only up to $300: your existing insulation is between R-12 and R-19, which is usually about 4 to 6 inches of material; once you increase the total insulation to R-38 or greater, you’ll be eligible for the Tier II rebate.

The Benefits of Updated Attic Insulation

When it comes to insulation, most homeowners are most acquainted with the material that’s in their attic, primarily because this is the easiest to access and inspect. Attic insulation protects your home from the stack effect, irregular temperatures, and more. Effective insulation is measured by the material’s R-value, which is the numerical value of the insulation’s thermal resistance. A higher R-value means the material can more effectively reduce heat transfer, which is the rate at which heat enters and exits a building.

Heat rises, meaning your attic can turn into a furnace in the summer and an escape for crucial warmth during the winter. While the floor of the attic will be your primary concern, any industry leader will tell you that it's just as crucial to insulate the ceilings, in between joists, and to take special care around beams and supports. Having an experienced professional inspect your home’s insulation can help you and your household determine if there is poor coverage, improperly installed material, or whether the insulation has deteriorated or been damaged.

How to Get Your New Mexico Rebate

There are a few key steps to getting your gas rebate from New Mexico Gas Company. First, you’ll have to work with a participating contractor for the installation and equipment - this means a personal DIY project may not be covered. Koala Insulation is a participating contractor working within the New Mexico Gas Company regulations and programs, including the ENERGY STAR Space Heating Rebate Program and Residential Insulation Rebate Program. Next, you need to save your documentation, including the invoice, a “before photo” next to a ruler to show the R-value of your current insulation, and a photo of your furnace or boiler.

Once you have the installation complete and the necessary documents, you can start to submit your rebate application! There are three ways to accomplish this: Using NMGC's online tool, via email with your Rebate Application attached, or by mail with a printed version of the Rebate Application. Once the application has been received, NMGC says you can "expect your check-in six to eight weeks." For more information on the rebate opportunity, application requirements, and links to the online Rebate Application, visit NMGC’s article on their 2022 gas rebates here.
