Attic Insulation Assessments: Keep Your Home Comfortable and Energy‑Efficient

In addition to installing batt, blown-in, and spray foam insulation, attic insulation assessments are a large part of what we do for customers. What does an attic insulation assessment entail, and why should you schedule one?
Attics are susceptible to poor ventilation and air leaks that can make it difficult for even newer HVAC systems to keep conditioned living space at a comfortable temperature when temperatures outside are very hot or cold. Older homes are often under-insulated, and often the original insulation has deteriorated over time. Contractors working in the attic can also displace or damage the insulation. For these reasons, it’s a good idea to have your attic insulation assessed every few years to make sure your home is energy efficient and to minimize risk for costly damage during extreme hot or cold weather. When performing an attic insulation inspection, we do several things:
- We inspect existing insulation levels to determine if they are sufficient for the space. According to Texas building code, residential buildings require an insulation value of R-38, which is about 13” of loosefill insulation. Most homes built prior to 2015 do not meet this standard.
- We check the condition of the existing insulation, inspecting it for water damage or rodent droppings. If you have fiberglass batts we check for signs of damage and mold.
- We use an infrared camera to check for hot and cold spots in your attic that can indicate air leaks and areas where insulation may be low or missing. Thermal imaging can also help us identify humidity issues that can lead to mold and uncomfortable air quality in the home.
Once we have inspected your attic, we will let you know if additional insulation is needed. We’ll also discuss what kind of insulation will work best in your space and provide recommendations for other improvements that can help you stay more comfortable while saving on energy costs. For example, if your attic needs better ventilation we offer solar attic fans to further regulate temperatures in your home.
