It’s already mid-October and cooler weather is right around the corner. The Farmers' Almanac is calling for another bitter cold winter in Dallas and Collin Counties. While we don't know if the Farmers have it right, we do know that last February's brutal weather caught many people unprepared. Much of the damage in Richardson, Plano and Dallas homes was due not just to poor insulation, but to unreliability of the north Texas power grid. While homeowners cannot do anything to make the grid more reliable, they can make sure that their reliance on their HVAC system is less by making sure their attic and water pipes are well insulated. Here are three important things to do before winter:

Test the furnace and make certain it is working before cold weather arrives
Check the attic for exposed pipes and make sure they are well wrapped
Check attic insulation for a depth of at least 13 inches
Make certain that attic vents are clear and clean and that the attic will not be a winter nesting spot for animals or rodents
Change HVAC filters so that your fan and furnace do not have to work harder than they will already
