Insulating a 100 Year Old Victorian Home in Central NJ
Bringing Insulation Into a 100 Year Old Victorian
What We Walked Into
This one was in Central New Jersey, not far from Princeton. From the outside, it looked solid. Really well kept for its age. Nothing that would make you think there was a major issue.
Inside felt different.
The homeowner mentioned certain rooms were always either too hot or too cold, depending on the time of year. You could feel it walking from one room to the next. Took about five seconds to notice something was off.

What Was Going On
We checked the attic first.
Basically, nothing there doing its job. A little old material scattered around, but not enough to matter. Walls were the bigger issue though. Completely empty. No insulation at all in most of the cavities.
You don’t always expect it to be that bare, but in homes this old around places like Freehold, it happens more than people think.
Air was just moving. Everywhere.
Why It Was Happening
Back when this house was built, insulation wasn’t really part of the build process like it is now. Over time, anything that might’ve been added either settled out or just broke down. And then you’ve got the sloped ceilings. Those areas are tricky. Easy to ignore, but they’re usually where a lot of heat transfer happens. This one was no different. Felt warm up there even early in the morning.
How We Handled It
We didn’t go with just one fix here. It wouldn’t have worked.
For the walls, we installed dense pack cellulose. That lets us fill those empty cavities without tearing everything open. Packs in tight, slows the airflow down, and starts to stabilize the space pretty quickly.
Attic got an open blow of cellulose. Even coverage, nothing fancy, just done the right way so it actually works.
Then we hit the slants and tighter sections with closed cell spray foam. That part mattered more than expected. It seals everything up instead of just sitting there like traditional insulation.

What Changed
You could feel it before we even finished loading up. The house just held air better. Less movement. Less of that uneven feeling from room to room. Even sound felt a little more muted inside. Homeowner noticed it right away too.
What We See Around Here
This isn’t unusual for Central Jersey. Older homes around Princeton, even parts closer to New Brunswick, tend to have the same issue hiding behind the walls. Everything looks fine until you actually check. Then it all adds up.
How It Turned Out
At the end of it, nothing about the house changed visually. Still the same character, same structure.
But inside, it’s a completely different experience now. More stable, more comfortable, and not fighting itself every time the HVAC kicks on. Call us or visit our website for a free estimate.
