Is fall the best time to insulate your home? | Koala Insulation

Remember last winter, when you were turning up the heat for the fourth time that day because someone complained about how cold they felt in the house? Didn’t you wonder how high the heating bill would be? You asked yourself what you could improve about your house to make the heating bill less expensive? Let’s avoid a repeat of last winter by putting a thicker sweater around your house.

It’s Fall Y’all, and it’s time to insulate your house!

Here are four reasons why there’s no better time than now to insulate your home (and one BONUS reason I’m saving for the end): Safety, Humidity, Savings, and Comfort.

Safety First!

Summer in the South gets dangerously hot and incredibly humid outside, easily reaching heat indices of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Now imagine what that feels like in your attic. Heat rises to your attic. And remember your roof spends all day absorbing all the sun’s energy. So even with a little air circulation, that attic of yours can reach broiling temperatures of up to 170 degrees. No one wants to work in that. In fact, not you nor anyone else should be working in those conditions. That kind of heat is deadly.

During the fall, the temperature gets a lot more reasonable. Cooler air outside directly impacts how warm it gets in the attic making it safer for you, or the crew you hire, to put in the new insulation.

Drier Air

Let’s talk humidity. We all know Georgia likes to stay at 100% humidity all Summer long. But come Fall, the dampness retreats and the air gets significantly drier.

This is important when installing insulation because, whether you choose spray foam or loose-fill, you need to make sure the surface the insulation is placed on is as dry as possible. Any moisture on the surface may get trapped under the insulation and cause mold and mildew damage, which is expensive to repair.

Dry fall air equals easy installation and no mold damage.

The Savings!

The third reason is the one that’ll affect your bank account in a good way! It’s the savings. It costs some serious cash to run your central air conditioning unit or heater.

Even if you only had a fireplace, without proper insulation in the attic and in your walls, you’d be stuck outside cutting an entire forest down just to stay warm.

The right thermal barrier keeps the warmth in and the cold out during winter, and does the reverse in the summer.

If you have central heating, insulation covering the ducts will help the hot air stay warm on its way to the vent. Properly blown or laid insulation will keep that warm air from escaping through the walls and will help keep the heat from being lost through the supporting beams in your attic. It really is like a sweater for your house.

Proper insulation can result in up to 14% savings on your heating and cooling bill in most of Georgia and up to 17% in the northern mountains of the state.

That’s easily hundreds of dollars each year you can put toward a family vacation or that new grill you’ve had your eye on.

So stop throwing money in the fireplace and get your house ready for sweater weather with insulation.

Stay Comfortable

If you plan on staying in your home while the insulation is being refreshed or switched for new insulation, Fall weather is pleasant enough that your energy bill won’t skyrocket for the time your house is without insulation.

Having to change out insulation during the summer or winter, when temperatures are at their most extreme, would be insanely uncomfortable for those stuck living in the house.

So if you have a major insulation switch planned, and you’re staying in your home, you’re gonna want to do it all during Fall when the weather is nearly perfect.

The Best Time Is Now

Don’t be like that old Aesop Fable where the Grasshopper didn’t prepare for winter and made fun of the Ant who worked all Summer and Fall to be ready for Winter. Be the Ant!
