We were out in downtown Savannah working with a builder on a garage that was still in the build phase. At that point, everything looked good. Framing was up, doors were in, space was clean. Nothing to fix. This was more about deciding how the garage was actually going to feel once everything was finished.
What We Saw
When we walked it, it was pretty straightforward. Open garage, fresh build, no insulation in yet. Which is honestly the best time to be having this conversation. Because once drywall goes up, your options change a bit. The builder already knew they didn’t want this to turn into one of those garages that feels like an oven in the summer and damp the rest of the year. That’s pretty common around here.
Why This Matters
Savannah garages can get rough. You shut the door in the afternoon and it traps heat. Add in humidity, and it just sits there. Even when the rest of the house feels fine, the garage ends up being a completely different environment. We hear it all the time. People open the garage and it’s like stepping into a different climate. That usually comes down to air moving in and out more than it should.
What We Did
For this one, we went with closed cell spray foam. We sprayed along the walls and worked into all the framing so everything seals up tight. It’s not like laying batts where you’re fitting pieces in between studs. This goes in and sticks to everything, fills the gaps, and basically closes off the space from outside air moving through it. That’s the part that makes the difference. Not just “insulation,” but actually controlling what’s coming in and out of the space.
How It Went
This one went pretty easy. Builder had everything ready, we came in, did our part, and moved through it without any issues. No having to work around anything, no surprises once we got started. Those are always the better jobs.
Results
Once it’s done, it doesn’t look like a dramatic change. You still see the framing, the walls… nothing flashy. But if you’ve been in enough garages around here, you can tell right away this one’s going to feel different. It’s not going to trap heat the same way. It’s not going to hold moisture like most of them do. It just ends up being a more usable space. That’s really the goal.
Local Context
We’re seeing more builders in Savannah go this route now. Garages aren’t just storage anymore. People are using them for projects, gyms, even just wanting them to feel like part of the house instead of something separate. And once you’ve been in one that’s insulated like this, it’s hard to go back.
