There are several types of insulation we can install in your home. In general, they fall into three categories:

• Loose-fill insulation, also called blown-in insulation, refers to small particles blown into the attic. These small particles pile up, like snow or sand, until they reach the recommended depth for the R-value you want. We use either fiberglass or cellulose for loose-fill applications. This is the simplest and most cost-effective way to insulate the floor of your attic. Loose-fill cellulose can also be packed into uninsulated wall cavities.
• Batts are fiberglass blankets applied between ceiling rafters and/or wall studs. Batt insulation is usually pink in color and found in many older homes. When applied in walls or under attic flooring, these need to be thick enough to fill the entire space and cut to fit around any obstacles in the bay.
• Spray Foam utilizes a pair of chemicals that are forced through a high-pressure hose at high temperature. The chemicals combine right before they are applied to the surface to be insulated, expanding to fill the space being sprayed to insulate and air-seal at the same time. Spray foam is the most energy-efficient insulation available, but it requires a more complicated installation process and specialized equipment. It is also the most expensive form of insulation. There are two types: open cell foam feels firm, but spongy when it dries, and is usually best for residential applications. Closed cell foam dries like hard plastic, and is commonly used for metal buildings and commercial applications.

If you’ve ever looked into an attic in Texas, loose-fill fiberglass is probably what you saw. Batts are a popular form of attic insulation in colder climates, and are probably in your walls right now. Spray foam is not common, but is becoming a more popular solution for metal buildings, businesses, and high-end homes, especially new builds.
