Let's get some information!

Got a call about a weird smell

We see this a lot when things start to thaw.

Homeowner in St. Paul said the house just didn’t smell right. Not strong. Just…off. Kind of one of those things you notice walking in after being gone for a few hours. They thought maybe it was the dog at first.

It wasn’t.

Went down there and yeah… it made sense

Soon as we opened the crawl space, you could feel it.

Cool air. Damp. That kind of smell like wet wood or cardboard that’s been sitting too long. Not overpowering, but it sticks with you. Insulation was hanging in a few spots, some of it already on the ground. You could tell pretty quick air was moving through there more than it should.

At first glance, didn’t seem terrible

Honestly, we thought it might be a quick fix.

But then you move a little further in, and it keeps showing up. More sagging. More gaps. That’s usually how it goes. It’s never just one spot. It’s kind of like a slow leak you don’t notice until everything around it starts to feel it.

What we ended up doing

Pulled everything that wasn’t doing its job anymore. Cleaned it up. Installed new insulation the right way and sealed the crawl space with a vapor barrier so moisture isn’t just sitting there. That part mattered. Took most of the day. Tight space, a lot of stopping and adjusting.

This part always reminds me of another job

We were in Roseville not long ago.

Different house, same situation. They had already spent money trying to fix airflow upstairs. Didn’t touch the crawl space. That’s usually where it starts. Not always obvious. The thing people don’t think about

Air from down there doesn’t stay down there.

It comes up. Floors, walls, everything. So, when that space is damp, you feel it. System runs longer. Rooms feel uneven. It’s all connected, even if it doesn’t seem like it at first. That was it.

And then after we wrapped up

Smell was gone.

Homeowner mentioned it later that night. Said the house just felt…cleaner. Hard to explain, but you notice it. Floors didn’t feel as cold either the next morning.
