Let's get some information!

We were out on a job in Madison this week where the homeowner originally thought they just had “a little bit” of animal activity in the attic.

Nothing crazy at first.

But once we got up there and started moving insulation around, you could tell pretty quick this had been going on for a while. The smell hit first. Kind of that damp, stale smell mixed with old insulation and dust that had been sitting up there for years. Not great.

The insulation was too far gone

A lot of times people ask if we can just add insulation over the top and move on.

Honestly, sometimes yes. This wasn’t one of those jobs.

The insulation had been flattened down in a bunch of areas and there were trails running through it from animals moving around up there. We found nesting material in multiple spots and some areas were matted together kind of like clogged lint in a dryer vent. Once insulation gets to that point, it’s usually not worth trying to save.

That was it.

Took longer than they expected

The homeowner mentioned they had heard scratching mostly at night during the winter but figured the animals were gone already.

That’s usually how it goes.

People stop hearing the noise and assume the problem fixed itself, but the insulation is still sitting there contaminated. In this case, you could actually see where sections had been pushed down over time from repeated movement. We see this a lot around Madison, Sun Prairie, and even over toward Middleton once the temperatures start dropping outside.

And the attic was hot. Even early in the morning.

Full removal was the right call

We ended up doing a full insulation removal so the attic could basically start fresh again. Removed everything out, cleaned the space up, and got it ready for new insulation afterward.

One thing that stood out on this job was how quiet the homeowner got once they actually saw the attic.

Before that, they thought we might just top things off with more insulation and be done in a few hours.

Once they saw the condition of it though, they understood why removal mattered.

That part mattered.

Sometimes the problem is bigger than the animals

And honestly, sometimes the animals are just the thing people notice first.

A lot of these older attics around Madison have airflow issues already. Then animals get in, insulation gets disturbed, temperatures start changing room to room, and utility bills slowly creep up. Kind of one of those things homeowners get used to little by little until somebody finally checks the attic.

Not every attic needs a full removal. But this one definitely did.

We even found spots they never noticed

There were a couple areas near the edges where you could actually see daylight coming through small openings. Easy access points for animals.

The homeowner even stopped and said, “Well… that explains a lot.”

Took our crew most of the day to get everything cleaned out correctly. Dirty job. Real dusty. But by the end of it, the attic was finally ready to be sealed up and reinsulated the right way.

Attics like this are more common than people think

Especially in Wisconsin once temperatures swing back and forth.

Animals look for warmth, and older insulation makes a pretty easy nesting area if entry points aren’t sealed properly. We’ve seen similar situations in homes all across the Madison area where homeowners had no idea how bad the insulation actually looked until it was removed.

If your attic has strange smells, uneven temperatures, or you’ve heard any animal activity at all, it’s worth having somebody look at it before things get worse. You can learn more about our attic insulation services and what we typically find during inspections.
