DFW-area homeowners from Haslet to Grapevine know that proper attic insulation is crucial in keeping your home cool during our long Texas summers, and warm and cozy during our chilly winters. Insulation has a shelf life and will need replacement at some point during the life of your home. But what are the signs that your insulation needs to be replaced?

• Temperature issues in your home: Do you have rooms that are always warmer than the rest of your house in the summer, or drafty in the winter?  Does your HVAC system run constantly trying to maintain the set temperature? These are possible signs that your insulation may have deteriorated to the point it is no longer sufficient. 
• Unusually high energy bills: Your heat or AC is running frequently, your home is not a comfortable temperature, and then you receive a huge electric or gas bill. This is another strong indication it’s time to audit your home’s insulation performance.
• Musty odors in your attic: If your attic smells, you may have moisture issues. Roof leaks and water damage can lead to moldy insulation. Fiberglass batts should be uniform in color and not have any dark black or brown spots. 
• Pests or rodent droppings in your attic: Rodents and insects will often tear apart or make nests in old insulation, leaving holes where hot or cold outdoor air, and more pests, can enter your home.
• You have an older home. Traditional insulation will start to break down or settle over time. Properly installed fiberglass batts can last for 80-100 years and blown-in insulation can last for 20-30 years; however, pests, contractors working in your attic, water damage, and other factors can cause it to break down much sooner. Furthermore, in 2015, North Texas cities updated building codes to require more insulation than was previously required. So if your insulation was installed before then, it may not meet current standards.
