Maria’s Upstairs Bedrooms Were 8–10 Degrees Hotter. We Found Out Why.
Maria had one of those problems that’s pretty hard to ignore in Las Vegas.
Her downstairs would be comfortable.
Go upstairs and it felt like a different house.
Ready to start your insulation project?
The bedrooms were consistently 8–10 degrees hotter, and her AC was running nonstop trying to keep up.
That’s when she called Koala Insulation of Las Vegas.
We went out to take a look, and once we got into the attic, we didn’t have to search very long for the problem.
There basically wasn’t any insulation up there.
We Could See the Bare Joists
That’s what really stood out.
Bare attic joists.
There was no real insulation barrier between the attic and the rooms Maria was trying to cool below it.
And in Las Vegas, that’s a problem.
The sun is beating down on that roof while the AC is trying to keep the bedrooms underneath it comfortable.
Without insulation separating those two spaces, the AC was fighting a battle it wasn’t going to win very easily.
Maria had been feeling the result every time she went upstairs.
We Blew In a Full Layer of Fiberglass
This one didn’t need a complicated solution.
It needed insulation.
Our crew installed a full layer of blown-in fiberglass insulation, bringing the attic up to code.
Blown-in fiberglass works well for an attic like this because we can spread it across the attic floor and get coverage around the framing and other areas that would be harder to cover evenly with batts.
You could see the difference in the attic as soon as we were finished.
Instead of looking at exposed joists, there was now a full blanket of insulation between that hot attic and Maria’s upstairs bedrooms.
That’s what had been missing.
The AC Finally Got Some Help
The change wasn’t limited to what we could see in the attic.
Maria noticed it inside the house too.
Her upstairs bedrooms are actually livable now.
The AC isn’t running nearly as much trying to keep those rooms cool, and she has already noticed a drop in her energy bill.
That’s a pretty good result from a problem that had been sitting right above her head.
And it’s a good reminder that an AC running nonstop doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong with the AC.
Sometimes it’s doing everything it can.
The house just isn’t giving it much help.
Sometimes the Problem Really Is That Obvious
We see plenty of attics where figuring out what’s wrong takes some investigating.
This wasn’t one of them.
Maria had rooms that were 8–10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house.
We climbed into the attic and found bare joists with no insulation protecting those rooms from the Las Vegas heat.
So, we fixed it.
Fresh blown-in fiberglass went in, the attic was brought up to code, and now the upstairs is staying more comfortable without the AC having to run constantly.
Problem solved.
If your upstairs feels like a different climate from the rest of your Las Vegas home, take a look at the attic before assuming your AC is the problem.
