His A/C Was Working Overtime. Then It Finally Gave Up.

We went out to a home in Orangeburg, SC after the homeowner had a pretty rough summer with his A/C.

The house was built back in the 80s, and when the summer heat really kicked in, the A/C was working hard trying to keep the house at the temperature he wanted.

Too hard, apparently.

It eventually went out.

When Koala Insulation of the Midlands came out to inspect the house, we got into the attic to see what was going on up there.

Didn’t take long to find something.

He only had about 3 inches of insulation.

Yeah.

Three inches.

That A/C Was Fighting a Losing Battle

You can have a good A/C system, but if there’s barely any insulation above the house, you’re asking that system to do a whole lot of work.

Especially during a South Carolina summer.

The homeowner was trying to cool the house while all that heat was sitting right above the ceiling with only a few inches of insulation in between.

The A/C kept working.

And working.

Until it didn’t.

That’s an expensive way to find out your attic needs more insulation.

We Had About 12 Inches to Add

Once we knew what we were dealing with, this one was pretty straightforward.

We needed a lot more insulation up there.

Our crew brought in the equipment and added another 12 inches of fiberglass insulation across the attic.

The goal was to bring the attic up to R-49.

So, we started blowing.

There’s a pretty big visual difference between three inches of insulation and what this attic looked like when we were finished.

You could actually see the difference as we worked our way across it.

Three inches wasn’t going to cut it.

Now there’s a much better layer between the living space and that hot attic.

Hopefully the A/C Can Relax a Little Now

This homeowner already learned the hard way what can happen when the cooling system has to keep running and running just to try to maintain the temperature inside.

The insulation isn’t replacing the A/C.

It’s helping the house hold onto the air the A/C is working to cool.

That’s the part that was missing here.

With the attic now brought up to R-49, the home has a much better setup for holding the desired indoor temperature instead of making the A/C fight against the attic all summer.

And around Orangeburg, that matters.

A lot.

Three Inches to R-49

Sometimes we get into an attic and find a bunch of different things that need attention.

This one had a pretty obvious problem.

Not enough insulation.

Koala Insulation of the Midlands added another 12 inches of fiberglass and brought the attic to R-49.

That’s a whole lot better than where we started.

If your A/C seems like it’s running nonstop during the summer, don’t automatically assume the problem is entirely with the HVAC system.

It might be worth looking above your head too.
